My answer is A.I agree with Tam.The use of word 'instead' suggests that the the part saying that 'the theories reflect a consistent observational evaluative bias ' must refute the first few words of the sentence and thus option A suits best.

I see how you are arriving at A as the answer (finding relationships between words/phrases in the sentence), and I commend you for it. But, that doesn't make think that this question shouldn't be thrown out. Why? I just don't see how theories can be "disinterested" in their scientific objectivity. If someone could explain to me how that's possible, I'd be delighted. ![]() |

Disinterested means objective. A construction is an idea created by human beings. So the categories of knowledge are not actually present in nature; they're the way we have interpreted and organized the information that we have.
2 is wrong. Callous means unfeeling; we're not talking about emotion here. It's also not saying that the categories are WRONG (errors), just that we are not as objective as we think. |

When theories formerly considered to be _________ in their scientific objectivity are found instead to reflect a consistent observational evaluative bias, then the presumed neutrality of science gives way to the recognition that categories of knowledge are human _________.
1. disinterested...constructions 2. callous....errors 3. verifiable...prejudices 4. convincing....imperatives 5. unassailable...fantasies Ans: choice 3 / C seems to be the most appropriate. The choice of 'disinterested' for the first blank seems reduntant for the word 'objectivity'. Scientific objectivity implies that the theories are not biased or influenced. So using two words that give the same indication doesnt make a strong case. |
