This best answer is probably A. Yes, "self-serving" is the key word.

The audience could have been pejorative towards its, but "bemused reception", although it sounds fine, is maybe a little of a stretch, but possible. But, again, they could have been not only critical of the the person writing his own self-serving obituary but also utterly bewildered by it all. But, I'm not sure that I'd mark B wrong if a justification were given.
