For SCs, don't just look at what the words mean but take into account the sentence as a whole. Something intangible lies in there. For instance, the use of the phrase "self-serving" almost certainly means that the author is against what the person in question did. In other words, he would support the audience.

This best answer is probably A. Yes, "self-serving" is the key word.

The audience could have been pejorative towards its, but "bemused reception", although it sounds fine, is maybe a little of a stretch, but possible. But, again, they could have been not only critical of the the person writing his own self-serving obituary but also utterly bewildered by it all. But, I'm not sure that I'd mark B wrong if a justification were given.
