I checked the dictionary for and secondary meanings of enigmatic and there aren't any. I thought the answer was lofty because the author's remark in the sentence claimed superiority over the American public.

I go with B and C as i myself chose the same at my first attempt.
The answer for first one is B but not lofty because it's been mentioned gracious which is similar to lofty,so choose opposite to gracious and also see the word startled. y will he be startled beacuse of the remark given by gracious person?hence, choose enigmatic or myterious. |

I agree with Michael..that enigmatic is to cause puzzle.
However, in the above sentence, the adjective used for Author is gracious.A gracious author can never pass lofty statements, instead something that is contradictory,or that can create puzzle.Hence B. Its a mere try from my side ..need criticism to evaluate my line of reasoning... |

"The interviewer was startled to hear the otherwise gracious author". The author was normally gracious but not on this occasion (otherwise gracious), therefore the interviewer was surprised by the lofty comment. That's my take on it despite the OA. Michael
