during the opera's most famous aria tempo chosen by orchestra's conductor seemed ______ , without necessary relation to what had gone before.

b.melodious
c.capricious
d.compelling
e.cautious

friends, after choosing the answer, pls tell me the 'hint' which made u chose one..i wanted some input for the way of thinking.
i really hav problems in recognising the cues present in any sc.

If you get the idea behind the sentence you are 80% sure about the answer. "during the ...." the tempo chosen by the director is discordand, without necessary relation with what has gone before. Looking at the answer choices the most suitable I find is "capricious"

yup, I'm for capricious too. ..though it does not actually describe melodies. My clue is 'without necessary relation to what had gone before'

ure answers r correct..its 'capricious'...
hey eagle, ure clue is 'without necessary relation to what had gone before'..does it mean, the conductor did care about past n chose tempo out of 'caprice'??

As you must be knowing ,capricious is 'Characterized by or subject to whim; impulsive and unpredictable'- in this example 'the tempo chosen' seemed capricious. Like I said in the earlier post- the only reason why I hesitated is because words like capricious generally do not describe melodies/tempos. But it is the only word that fits in with the rest of the sentence.
