Answers: D,C,B,B
A note on the first question: It is very close between C and D. I would opt for D because it would seem that C means whether democracy is a political system or not. More precisely, it means whether democracy can play the role of a political system. I think there would be no dispute about that anytime. Correct me if I am wrong. |

sravna. I think first one is C
It cannot be D because 1) "Democracy as a political system will be superseded" This statement will never come from ETS! 2) Mind improves due to "reason" and not "evolution". 3) Note - reason and questioned are near synonyms. But superceded (sudden replacement) and evolution (gradual change) are not synonyms. Hence I think its C. Great questions. Do post more. May I ask where you got them from? Thanks |

1. Everyone in acedemia is liberal. They value liberalism and democracy. But this isnt a political test, its a test of thinking. Youve let your convictions get in the way of reason. Thats why this is a good question, the distractor will get a lot of people like you. It doesnt matter if the statement is inflammatory, your job is not to change to statement. 2. Our brain is a work in progress. The dystrophin genes (nerve genes) are some of the most rapidly evolving in humans. You can read about this in sciam.com. If you dont believe in evolution, you shouldnt be taking the GRE, you should be working at mcdonalds. 3. They shouldnt be synonyms, why would they need to be synonymous? The logic of the sentence needs to follow, thats about it. |

Sanjay, I developed these questions myself. So it is possible that the questions may sometimes be flawed . Let's discuss and agree on the best answer. |

For the first point I agree with what was already pointed out that this is primarily a test of one's ability to form coherent and consistent logic. The second point you make is debatable. I do not want to touch upon that but just mention whatever may be your "knowledge" about evolution or "reason" I think you should be fine if you stick to their defining features. By definition "evolution" means a gradual and continuous improvement which goes well with what is previously mentioned in the sentence. Also I would say debate over "correctness" should take the backseat as long as the author doesn't contradict common sense and presents the ideas in a consistent logic. For the third point you make, I would again side with an earlier opinion that words filling the blanks are decided solely by the logic of the sentence. |
