answer: B

clue is "Although". The sentence is telling what is more famous, visual art or literature.

Agree.

"Although" in the sentence indicates two pairs of things to be compared: 1.literature [word] vs. visual arts [pictorial images] and 2.flourish vs. not flourish

Which pair to choose is limited by the 2nd part of the sentence after ":" which is talking about the Irish culture that consists of word [literature] and pictorial images [visual arts]. That is to say the two are considered as a same thing-the Irish cultrue (suggest "comparable" tradition in the first blank), therefore the 1st pair is out, leaving the 2nd to be contrasted...

C.

7. Although Irish literature continued to flourish
after the sixteenth century, a ------- tradition
is ------- in the visual arts: we think about Irish
culture in terms of the word, not in terms of
pictorial images.

I think E suites best. Because according to the bold part it suggest that after sixteenth century most of the people try to leave the traditional things that were existing before sixteenth century. But in case of Irish art work although it continued to flourish after sixteen but the lost tradition is still exist in case of visual art and the tradition probably can be like we still think irish work in the perspective of word rather than pictorial image.

(A) rich. .superfluous
(B) lively. .found
(C) comparable. .absent
(D) forgotten. .apparent
(E) lost. .extant
I prefer C to D. there are twofold in this sentence. Firstly, the latter part of sentece tell us that we think about Irish culture in terms of the word, not in terms of picuorial images. So, we can guess the status of visual arts would be negative, and the earlier part of this sentence is a "although", so the meaning would be contrary, and the earlier part tell us that the literature is continue to flourish after .... the key is the word "continue", maybe the author wants to tell us that at first the two arts forms were developing together, but after sixteen century, the visual art was ceased to development. So the C would be OK. "a comparable tradition is absent in ..."
"comparable" means "liken or similar" in here.
