It is puzzling to observe thatjones novelhas recently been criticized for its ----- structure, since commentators have traditionally argued that its most obvious---- is its relentlessly rigid, indeed schematic ,framework.
1 attention to---preoccupation 2 speculation about....characteristic 2 parody...disparity 4 violation...contradiction 5. lack of...flaw |

A book characterized by a rigid, schematic framework is one in which a lot of attention is paid to structure. So it is puzzling that such a novel would be criticized for a 'lack of structure'. Moreover, this 'relentlessly rigid, indeed schematic, framework' can only represent a 'flaw'.
So the answer is 5. |

Sentence completions are certainly one of my strenths in the verbal as long as they are not limited to a matter of vocabulary. Therefore, I don't consider this particular sentence completion as a very difficult one. I think I saw it before, maybe in powerprep. I don't remember very well.
Do you generally find sentence completions difficult? Laura |

The only strategy that comes to my mind is elimination.
For example, 3 and 4 are clearly wrong because we could never have a parody structure or violation structure. Choice 1: It wouldn't be puzzling for Jones to be criticized for his attention to structure when he is overly preoccupied with structure. It would actually be a normal thing, not a puzzling one. Besides, the text says: 'ITS most obvious... is' so it's smth that refers to the novel, not the author, and the novel can't be preoccupied with smth. Choice 2: It is again unlikely that the novel would speculate about structure; the author actually uses a rather rigid structure. Anyway, I'm not very good at strategies. To be honest, I haven't really used any particular or conscious strategies on my test, nor do I generally have the patience to read the various tips they give in books. Luckily enough I have good instincts and I count a lot on my general English knowledge not just the one related to the GRE.I'm sure you'll do very well on SCs too. |

BTW, have you started working on your applications as well?
I'm working on this now and I find it more time consuming than I thought. I hope I'll have everything ready before the deadline. It would have been better to worry about this before the tests too. Laura |
