By looking at the options/even that is not req if you go through the first part of the sentence carefully , one can easily guess that the second blank denotes the stand(mutual beliefs) among several geologists abt the validity of drift..right? Rumours are in masses and not among geologists, which rules out [E]--<tricky though>
Also,'sophisticated telescopes now orbiting the earth will determine whether the continents are really moving..", rules out options [C] & [D]. [A], result in a contrast i.e. since the continents if really moving will be determined in next decade, consensus will not be obviated (make impossible).. Ans: B (fits in fine).. |

The answer must be B. We cannot say that theory of continental drift is a rumour. It can be a debatable (rifting, dividing) issue: some accept the theory while others are not.
However, sophisticated telescopes will soon resolve (forestall, stop) this debate. |

see rumors need not be resolved none of the other options seems plausible other than B and E such a proof need not subside rumors,it could also take a cause n effect type sentence completion->>as a result of the analysis some rift could be forestalled before it is too late

B does seem like the most fitting choice after looking through all 5 of them. However, i really don't like the use of forestall because that means more in a "preventative and hindering by prior measures" rather than stopping something that's already starting. Other than my unhappiness about the appropriateness of the word, it is the best answer out of the bunch.
