The ordering suggests a contrast betn the 2 blanks... as seen in the ans choice...

"seeming unlike their neighbors" this phrase says they are quite unique and they are are not afraid of it.conformity here would mean to be acceptance to something or someway or doing things

You can eliminate A,B,C because the second word doesn't fit "unlike their neighbours". "Ostentation" means expressive display of wealth or pretentious display of st. If the Gibsons were "little given to Ostentations" then that means they DON'T display their excessive eccentricity. That's not what the sentence means.

If they're NOT afraid to display their singularity (uniqueness) then they shouldn't care about Conformity. Thus, D is your answer.

Alright... so on the basis of the second word only A, D, and E should be left in the bunch right? if its a characteristic that's "unlike their neighbours" its got to be something that stands out. so absurdity, singularity, and eccentricity can qualify.

Next round of elimination: you want something that's the opposite of your second word.
humility - is not the opposite of absurdity (arrogance maybe)
conformity - is the opposite of singularity
ostentation - is not the opposite of eccentricity (austerity maybe)

The reason why the first word has to be opposite of the second is because it says "little given to ____".

So in short you have "little given to conformity, the Gibsons show their singularity."
