I agree with Mystic on all the SCs, but think the last question is a little obscure...

The demise of the rigorous academic curriculum in high school resulted , in part , from the progressive rhetoric that __________ the study of subjects previously thought __________ as part of school learning .

advocated .... necessary
enhanced..... indispensable
restricted.....impractical
undermined......popular
sanctioned.....inappropriate

The first portion of the statement hints that "demise," that is termination, of the rigorous curriculum was brought upon the issues raised in the second portion. The previously popular areas of study were undermined by the progressive rhetoric, causing the demise...

I was a little unsure of the last question as well. So we know the fact is that the progressive rhetoric must have done something to jepordize the previously rigorous teaching. I think "undermine" would fit wonderfully for the first part but i didn't like "popular". This is because i was thinking along the lines that when something is "popular" it is not necessarily rigorous. That's why i went for the opposite direction. As in they introduced topics that were previously deemed "inappropriate", which can cause the demise of the rigorous curriculum.

Well I guess i can accept it that "undermine..and popular" is the correct answer. Can someone you guys fill me in why you'd choose it over E though?

the word 'demise' suggests that the academic curriculum was done away with,by the progressive rhetoric."resulted,in part" suggests that the rhetoric was to some extent a reason for this termination..
So the 1st blank should be filled up with a word that creates a negative effect for the previous curriculum, by the rhetoric. Thus the 'undermined' fits in.

If we use the word 'sanction' here,it would ratify the thought of the rhetoric, but they have already mentioned that the rhetoric,to some extent led to the termination of the old curriculum.

Whereas the second blank should be filled up with a word that justifies the earlier academic curriculum during that time..something like -the then popular or accepted curriculum was done away with by the rhetoric..

I guess,I have made it too long and too confusing...wonder if the explanation helps

cheers
