The previously popular areas of study were undermined by the progressive rhetoric, causing the demise... |

The demise of the rigorous academic curriculum in high school resulted , in part , from the progressive rhetoric that __________ the study of subjects previously thought __________ as part of school learning .
advocated .... necessary enhanced..... indispensable restricted.....impractical undermined......popular sanctioned.....inappropriate the word 'demise' suggests that the academic curriculum was done away with,by the progressive rhetoric."resulted,in part" suggests that the rhetoric was to some extent a reason for this termination.. So the 1st blank should be filled up with a word that creates a negative effect for the previous curriculum, by the rhetoric. Thus the 'undermined' fits in. If we use the word 'sanction' here,it would ratify the thought of the rhetoric, but they have already mentioned that the rhetoric,to some extent led to the termination of the old curriculum. Whereas the second blank should be filled up with a word that justifies the earlier academic curriculum during that time..something like -the then popular or accepted curriculum was done away with by the rhetoric.. I guess,I have made it too long and too confusing...wonder if the explanation helps ![]() cheers |
