1) Unexpected....overhaul?
Startling is unexpected...there will need to be a revision or overhaul of current time-keeping 2) Prize...tractable? The biologists are amazed at the intricacies of the islands; whereas in the lab, such an environment can be easily managed |

In order to replicate the natual milieu of the islands in a laboratory setting, the biologists can only manage or manipulate certain elements- that it why it is "reduced'- nothing can compare to the real complexities of nature...and this is why the biologists revere the islands Does that make better sense?
