E. cautious..dynamic

My take is D , the two words we are looking for are contradictory to each other.

2) the second part "enmeshed in ... social circumstances...."

suggests that they are vulnerable or have certain vested interests.

"enmeshed in a web of personal and social circumstances" suggests that scientists can be influenced by personal circumstances. The word 'though' is the detour which means that there will be a change of direction in the sentence/contradiction.
