Lightbulb Exceedingly Tough Vocabulary List.

For those who want to go the extra distance and cram a basketful of words apart from the Barron's list, this is the list to break skulls over!

14,664 ultra-hard words:
http://phrontistery.50megs.com/allwords.html

A resource database for words:
Forthright Phrontistry

Forthright: forth'rit, adj straightforward, frank [OE forth from fore before, OE riht right]
Phrontistery: fron'tis-te-ri, n a thinking-place [Gr phrontisterion from phrontistes a thinker, from phroneein to think; applied by Aristophanes to the school of Socrates]

http://phrontistery.50megs.com/

EDIT: seeing gre nidhi's comment below, I would ask the same of anyone
who has given the exam. Thanks.

Re: Exceedingly Tough Vocabulary List.

Wow, studying all these words will take ages. It is probably worth studying only if you have atleast 6 months left for Gre, though it might be worth a glance for those with less time.

I haven't given my Gre, but I think the ETS would have to be nuts if they are to ask words from that list, there are words for anything and everything.

Re: Exceedingly Tough Vocabulary List.

I don't think the actual GRE test will be look like this one!!
I'll stick to the Baron & PR's lists & some others who had given the tests.

I agree with Jacob , "there are words for everything and anything"

Hey dingus

Don't scare the people around here.

All u guys who've not taken ur GRE forget lookin' at the page. For the rest of the guyz i think it's worth exploring. Even if there's an identified research section in verbal, i doubt if words from this list wud come.

Cheers

Re: Exceedingly Tough Vocabulary List.

I can't give any comment on this if you want a 800 in Verbal.

But if you want a decent score of 600+, I think the word list is WAY TOO HARD......

Just my opinion, take out Barron's solidly and read a lot of advanced editorials, papers, and articles.

You should expand your reading list to include types of topics, such as science, art review, technical, book review, politics, orbituaries, etc.

The words in GRE are not useless words. They are used in different places for different purposes.

So, by expanding your reading list, you are familiaring yourself with the actual usage of the words being tested in GRE.

For most of the words I encountered in my GRE examination, I can find them on the net. Moreover, most of them are quite widely used, though by a special group of people. For example, one word that I encountered was widely used by cooks and chefs.

Re: Exceedingly Tough Vocabulary List.

I don't think it's realistic to study 14600 words for a mortal man. I studied Barrons only and scored 750 (this was paper-based test, I cannot say anything about CAT). If I were to prepare for GRE V again, I would stick to Barrons only. Barrons is pretty challenging and you'll need lots of time to master it. You'll also need lots of time for practicing, and lots of time for other aspects of your application (e.g. SOP). I think trying to study 14600 list will be counter-productive (unless you have a photographic memory).

Re: Exceedingly Tough Vocabulary List.

OK. Just as a clarification to anyone who rakes up this thread: I hadn't taken my GRE when I posted the site. So naturally, I was worried about the words which would be tested on the exam day. I eventually decided NOT to attempt cramming the words although I still find this list very interesting. I took the CBT and scored a 710 on the verbal. None of the words I got were tough (according to me). I found that I tripped up on simple words because the analogy links confounded me.
