GRE Text Completion (MGRE Practice Test)

I was hoping someone could help me with these sentence completion questions that came up on my MGRE Practice test!
1)The enjoyment of private goods generally (i) _______ others from doing so as well, a fact that creates a natural rivalry for such goods. On the other hand, one person’s enjoyment of a public good generally does not preclude enjoyment by another. Therefore, public goods fundamentally involve (ii) _______The problem involves how to fund such public goods, for their very nature creates an incentive to (iii) _______them without paying.
    Blank (i)
    excludes
    exhausts
    exalts
    Blank (ii)
    cooperation
    competition
    consumption
    Blank (iii)
    exchange
    acquiesce
    benefit from

2)He made a promise to himself never to__________ her grave and kept this promise even after he learned of how misguided his beliefs of her maliciousness had been.
    profane
    discern
    despoil
    propound
    hallow
    venerate
The answers venerate and hallow seem obvious, after looking through the explanation provided. However, I thought it could be profane and despoil because maybe initially he thought she might not have been "very" malicious (which he possibly could live with), but later found out she had been more malicious then he thought, but had to stick to his promise. I think I'm assuming a lot, but I'm a bit confused why that dosen't work.

    Cheers!

    For the second question
The answers are Venerate and Hallow because he made promise that he will never do "something" though he later realised how wrong he was .That means we are looking here for positive words like respect or etc... all the words other than venerate and hallow are negative. So those fits best .As u thought it would be profane (Disrespect) and despoil (Violently removing something) are negative words.

For the first question i am not sure but it think answers are -
    1 exalts
    2 consumption
    3 acquiesce

I agree about venerate and hallow.

For the first question, I think it should be:

    1) Excludes (the hint is that it "creates a natural rivalry")
    2) Cooperation (the hint is that "one person’s enjoyment...does not preclude enjoyment by another")
    3) Benefit from (the hint is "without paying". They benefit from the public good even though they don't have to pay for them)

    Hope that helps!

    Hello, Sid!

For the first question the best answers are 1) excludes, 2) cooperation, and 3) benefit from.

    Here is the logic:

    1) Excludes is the only possibility. Exhausts means to make someone tired. That makes no sense. Exalts means to respect or hold someone in high regard. That makes no sense.
    2) Cooperation is the only possibility. The writer is arguing that people can all enjoy things in the public sector. This is true. We can all go to the library without fighting each other. Hence, we can cooperate and share books.
    3) This is a goofy one. I explain why below. Benefit from is the best answer. Again, the writer states that the lack of competition means that people can use public goods. In real life, we often use "public goods" because they are free. To get "private goods" we have to ask permission or pay from them. You can't go to someone's house and use his or her books. You CAN go to a PUBLIC library and use the books. Same idea.

I don't like the third blank that much because someone might argue that people share or "EXCHANGE PUBLIC GOODS" with each other since they are cooperating. it depends on what you mean by exchange. Do you mean exchanging it at a store or exchanging it with other people? This can make "exchange" make some sense too. The third choice isn't perfectly written.

    2) Hallow makes the most sense. Hallow is the only choice that is DIRECTLY related to graves/funerals and that is a positive "blessing". It is a religious/spiritual word that has a positive meaning in this context. This is a clue. Since the writer shows us that the person who was buried was viewed as a bad person, this tells us that "He" would avoid giving such a blessing to this person. "He" must have really had big issues with "her" because even after finding out that she might not have been evil, "he" still doesn't want to give her a ritual blessing. For example, imagine that she was accused of irresponsible drinking and driving and intentionally killed "his" kids by running over them. Later he found out that she wasn't drinking and wasn't trying to hurt the kids. It was the kids that were playing in the street at night and she couldn't see them. Sometimes thinking of realistic examples helps.
