My vocab progress
vocab vocab everyday... sigh... but my progress seem to be very slow...
Btw, I'm not a native speaker. I guess I'm rather weak in my English though I studied it as my 1st language back then. I'm surprised by the double penalty as mentioned in GRE CAT : How GRE testing works. I wonder if it is true... My vocab progress: - Initially started with 15 new words a day. Now 30 words a day. How many words you guys learn a day? - Completed 4 Princeton word lists, 2 more to go. - Completed 10 GREbible lists. - Thinking of going through Barron's list. Found this website: The Free & Smart Way to Learn SAT Test Vocabulary Words » Vocabulary Lists Only 333 high frequency words? Some practices I had so far...in sequence... - Princeton. Q490/V330 (what a demoralizing 1st test!) - ETS 1. Q550/V350 - GREbible. Q730/V440 (GREbible software has lots of errors) - Arco. Q620 - Kaplan. Q680/V300 (what a low verbal score!) - Cambridge. Q660/V610 - Nova. Q780/V340 (The math part is simply too easy) - mygretutor. Q560/V540 Maybe my study plan and strategy have gone wrong some where. Any suggestions? :-) I hope to do whatever I can for the next 3 weeks! Thanks, James |

Do you think the double penalty claim by GRE CAT : How GRE testing works is true?

I think there's no shortcut to this problem and to be honest you CAN'T do it in just 2 weeks unless you are a computer! Still interested? read on.
I've read people claiming that they memorized 4-5 lists per day. I followed this too earlier but it literally didn't work because even if you cram 100+ words a day, you are hardly able to retain 20-25% of them. The point is that it becomes quite futile an effort to overload oneself with such a prodigious amount of words in one go. So my advice would be to do it the "hard way" i.e. stick to your plan of 30 words per day and then USE them! I guess maintaining a blog these days is not a big deal, so you may easily make use of this vocab in writing. Thats the most effective and best way of retaining the new vocab. Get a feel of these words and understand their nuance. Another thing that can really help is using flashcards (as mentioned in the Barron's).. But again don't overburden yourself with anything more than a stack of 5 cards! You may carry them with you and shuffle through them several times a day. Once you have memorized a card, replace it with a new once from your 'pool'. Thats quite a useful technique and I call it "divide and conquer strategy" ![]() I hope the combination of these two techniques work for you (as they are working for me big time). Good luck! |
