I recommend reviewing the Word of the Day archives at dictionary.com:

Dictionary.com/Word of the Day Archive

You can load a full year at a time (365 words). After the first three years the words tend to repeat themselves, so check out the archives from 1999, 2000, and 2001. There are a lot of words there that sound like good words to know but are not in Barron's or Kaplan.

I love that site! Another good tool is the thesaurus feature the site offers. I've used this to learn words in groups before. Also, studying the thesaurus helps you think more broadly in terms of vocabulary.
