using images to memorize Barrons word list?
Are you guys aware of any kind of software that connects every word in the list with some pictures which aparently makes it easier to memorize the words. as you are using more than one of your senses. I was wondering how can you possibly connect every single word with a picture? say for example Philistine.. any one any idea? please share...

The Philistines were a group of warriors in the bible. I think of them as barbarians (the Greeks called uncultured people barbarians), although they were actually quite advanced.

I do remember seeing one, but the images were all so absurd and overwhelming that one forgot the word completely, and only remembered the picture. It was also not GRE words, but some random collection, so I felt it was quite a waste of time.

I think if you're trying to memorize a large list of words, especially abstract words, making mental pictures would be a waste of effort. Maybe if there are a few words that you just can't seem to get after multiple tries, or if there are words that sound alike that you keep getting confused, a mental image can help.

I find the old fashioned mugging-up to be the most effective way. It is so underrated. But I highly recommend it.
For e.g. Out loud repeat to yourself: CHTHONIC dwelling under earth CHTHONIC dwelling under earth CHTHONIC dwelling under earth ... 10 times. Repeat the process when you forget the word. After a couple of times, it will stick. Best part is I find rote-learning can withstand high-pressure situation of exams with ease. create your own really absurd images for certain words.
For example i pictured my friend, who is a tomboy through and through masked in fulsome makeup so that rather than looking beautiful is actually disturbing. Fulsome - excessive, overabundant that it's disgusting |
