GRE score - Q:800 V:690
I have only used the barrons book to study for my GRE. I feel that the math questions in Barrons are a notch simpler than that in the actual GRE. However, they are still useful as practice to get used to the "tricks" used in the actual test.
As for verbal. I studied the barrons word list diligently. I think I could remember 70-80% of the words in there. I guess about 50% of the words in the verbal section were from the word list. My vocab is really not that strong but studying the word list helps. I spent about 3 months studying the word list. When I took my SAT many years ago, I didn't study the word list at all and I scored 600 for verbal. I hardly practised math questions and I scored 750 for quant. So my total score then was 1350. My GRE score of 1490 was a pleasant surprise. So my advice is.. study study study. Give yourself lots of time to study! I'm still waiting for my AWA results. For those who have taken the computer test, how long did it take for you to receive the test results? ETS website says you should get it within 10-15 days. It has been 16 days (including weekends) and I still haven't gotten it. Is it too early to call them? |

Some questions were comparable to Barrons. But I feel that in the actual GRE the questions need more calculations. You can have a feel of it using hte powerprep software. I think the powerprep software is really useful because what you see there is really what you get on the actual GRE. When I work on quant test in the barron's CD, I still have about 10-15 mins left when I'm done with all the questions. But in powerprep and actual GRE, i'm usually left with under 2 minutes. I'll be applying to MA programes because PHDs are so tough to get in. But I'll try and see how my luck goes (the funding is attractive). are you applying for econs programmes too? |

Oh I think it also helps to make sure you are awake and your brain is working super well when you're taking the test. I downed 2 cans of energy drink before my test. I was a zombie at the end of the day but at least I was really awake during the test and that was all it mattered.

I received my AWA score! I got a 5.0/6.0
Was a pleasant surprise as I was expecting a 4.5. I missed out a very important mistake in the argumentative essay. Feel kinda relieved now because NYU specified a cut off of 5.0 on their website. |

Hi econsgirl,
Congratulations for absolutely brilliant GRE scores. Could I ask you about the Barron's word list that you mentioned, to make it more clear, which one do you mean? 'Barron's GRE' book or 'Essential words for the GRE' book, or any other sources? (or may be they have the same words?I have the second one so do you think I should buy the first one as well or go through the powerprep will be enough for a high score in verbal and quantitative?) |
