GRE Paper-based or Computer-based

Hello everybody,

Do you have any idea, whether it differs for American University to take part in paper-based or Computer-based GRE ?Do they prefer the Computer-based?
And which one do you suggest?

I'm not aware of the preferences of universities but I would recommend you take the computer-based test simply because they're conducted every week at test centers and you get to know your score right away (for verbal and quant). Computer-based tests are pretty much what most of the students take anyway

Don't think universities would have a preference over that. But don't think you have the option either: ETS's GRE website says "Paper-based General Test administrations are offered in areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available." . So if you don't want to travel to another country, I guess you would be left with only one option.

Thank you razzman and hahahut for your answers,
I live in a place where only GRE paper-based is available, but as the computer-based is more common these days, I decided to travel to another country to take part in the computer-based version.
By the explanations you gave, I think I'm gonna try both of them.
But do you have any idea if the paper-based is easier or not?

Base on what I know, with CAT, you have to finish one question to move to the next. If you get stuck there, you have to make the tough call to move on or try to figure it out. Moving on means you would hint the computer that you are not up to that level but spending more time means you have less for other questions. I would definitely get very upset if I keep getting easy questions because that implies I have answered previous questions incorrectly. However, it is designed to finally lock up to your real level. Comparing to that, even I need to do more questions in paper based, each question count toward my final score equally, I have a clear idea of time, and I can go back to revise my answer later on. Just my 2c.

From the official website, ETS says "Research indicates that scores obtained from the Computer-Based General Test are comparable to the scores from the paper-based General Test. Thus, the mode of testing is not indicated on score reports sent to institutions".

Have a look here,

Hope that clears your doubt.

yeah, good luck. I was thinking for taking part in October as well.Do you think that late October is a good time? I mean, isn't it late as the deadline of some US universities is in the first half of the December?(I'm not that much sure how long does it take for the ETS to send the results, is it 5 weeks for students outside the US?)
