Feeling let down!
I had taken the GRE 5 years ago and I had a very poor score of 1060 (510V;550Q). Many of my friends and people who I know of have a score of atleast 1200. That makes me think I am not as intelligent as my friends are. Because of that I am having a low self esteem of myself. Perhaps the grey matter in my head is less compared to my friends. Currently I am preparing for the GRE again and planning to take it before the end of this year. Well, whenever I think of my old score and compare that with my friends I feel I am useless and feel I am not as intelligent as they are!

You know there is a reason why grad schools don't consider the GRE the sole indicator of grad school ability. Even if you scored lower once, it hardly makes you any less capable than any of your friends. Maybe you were having a bad day, or maybe the questions you got were just some really bad ones.
Grad schools look at a whole bunch of factors including your statement of purpose and LORs before making a decision. Why? Because the GRE is probably the worst indicator there is of intellectual ability. It is just a tool to sift the thousands of applications that they receive. In the end, the GRE is just a necessary means to an end. it has absolutely zero correlation to your intellect or abilities. Period. So stop feeling down and get on with your work. Good luck! |

what he said!
That was a long time ago you took that GRE. Also, I feel as though many people get better(intellectually speaking) as time goes on, so on average I'd say someone should do better at age 30 taking the GRE , vs. at age 24, but that is my opinion. |

Hey Vasoolraja, Your feeling is perfectly understandable. However, if you keep feeling that way, you may hurt your chances of doing well when you retake the test. It's been five years since you took it, which means those scores won't be reported on your next score report. Your slate has been wiped clean. That's such a liberating fact!
So take courage, leave the past behind and work hard towards doing very well this time. Your poor peformance the last time was probably because you did not study hard enough, or you did not study with the right material, or you had a bad day and so on. All you have to do is learn from those mistakes and put in your best this time. That way, your success is assured. ![]()

Hi vasoolraja,
You are just over-reacting, GRE is not an intelligence indicator, it's just a test. It's true that your friends performed better than you but I trust that you out-perform them in other aspects. Simply this is how life goes. If it makes you feel any better, Math is not my thing but I have to deal with it. Be sure that you are not alone in this ![]() |
