800Q,800V,3.5AWA
I took the GRE in December 2008. I studied a little for the math, but basically not at all for the other parts. I'm now applying to econ phd programs, and a lot of people are saying, how the heck did you get 800V and 3.5AWA? I'm not sure. I'm not a bad writer and I didn't think I messed up on the essays. Would it be worth asking for a rescore?
Also, is it weird that 3.5 was 58th percentile? |

And if you are confident with your writing, I think it's worthwhile for you to get a re-grading. |

OK, now I feel silly. I just dug out my ETS report, which I guess I haven't looked at in many months, and it says I got a 4.5. I guess that's less shocking. Sorry about that. I memorized it as 3.5 a long time ago for some reason.

To be honest, rapport, I did not prepare a lot. Back when I took it I wasn't expecting to apply to PhD programs in the near future. I was required to take it for my application to a program that is similar to Teach for America. I figured the score would not matter very much.
I studied very briefly the night before for writing and verbal and for a few hours the night before for math. So, I guess I don't have much to say that would be very helpful. I took a lot of prep tests for the LSAT, and I think that helped. So, probably taking a bunch of practice GREs would be good. Also, be confident. Don't psych yourself out. Good luck! |
