Well, I'll add my thoughts on approaching the questions, despite being a relative GRE neophyte.

This seems to be a difficult question to explain concisely, as it is easiest -- almost necessary -- to consider both blanks together. Here are my thoughts: The sentence is discussing a demise of a rigorous academic curriculum. The phrase containing the blanks asserts that this demise was partly the result of something done to the study of subjects that, before the demise, were previously considered something else. Well, how would a change in the study of subjects cause a demise in rigor? Presumably, if subjects considered necessary were excluded, or subjects considered unnecessary were included.

Lets re-articulate the phrase containing the blanks with both these possibilities:

1) ... from the progressive rhetoric that "included" the study of subjects previously thought "unnecessary" ...
2) ... from the progressive rhetoric that "excluded" the study of subjects previously thought "necessary" ...

"Progressive" is a clue as to which of these is more appropriate (as progress tends to be inclusive), but this consideration can be ignored by considering the answer choices:

A) 'Advocating' the study of subjects considered 'necessary'?" This would probably be good. It wouldn't lead to a demise of a rigorous curriculum.
B) 'Enhancing' the study of subjects considered 'indispensable' would also be good. It wouldn't lead to a demise.
C) 'Restricting' the study of subjects considered 'impractical' would also be good. It would prevent demise.
D) 'Undermining' the study of subjects considered 'popular' is a possibility, though excluding popular subjects seems unlikely to affect the rigor of curriculum.
E) 'Sanctioning' the study of subjects considered 'inappropriate'. Bingo. Definitely a way to effect a demise in a rigorous curriculum. So 'E' seems to be the best answer.

Let's consider the second blank first: "others believe that the jokes' purpose is to disrupt, by reducing all transactions to _____". "Disrupt" is the key word. If the purpose of jokes is to disrupt, then all transactions will be reduced to ... disruption, right? Consider the answer choices: does "confusion" fit "disruption"? Sure. "Symmetry"? No. "Dissonance (discord)"? Probably. "Chaos"? Definitely. "Uniformity"? No. So, given consideration of the second blank, choices 'A', 'C', and 'D' remain.

Now consider the first blank: "some see in practical jokes a wish for mastery in miniature over a world that seems very _____". A mastery over a world that seems what? Let's consider our three remaining choices: "Dubious" (doubtful)? "Harmonious"? Or "unruly" (refractory; difficult to manage or control). Clearly, "unruly" makes the most sense, as something unruly would, by definition, be difficult to gain mastery over; this is not necessarily true with something dubious or harmonious. In this case, it is important that something unruly is difficult to gain mastery over by definition -- this makes it clearly preferable over the other remaining choices ("dubious" and "harmonious"). Similarly, 'D' seems the best answer.

--------------------

Different people approach these questions differently, so take my reasoning with a grain of salt. It seems to me that the important thing is to develop your own reasoning, so that you can answer these questions using whatever logic comes easiest to you. But attention to logic and vocab is really all that is required. Incidentally, it should be clear that vocab is important here. If you have difficulty selecting choices due to a lack of discrimination between words, it could be a hint that hitting up one of the word lists (or at least learning words!) might be a helpful route to improvement -- especially given the importance of vocab in the other parts of the verbal section as well.

I apologize for not responding quicker, but I hope I have been able to help you with any confusion on other problems -- not to say that I'd necessarily have the answers!

In any case, let us know how you did good sir! I'm not too far behind: my test is tomorrow! =)
