I think what he means is that:

"participation in sports helps" is what he read in the book "wanna study in the US" by Natasha Prathap. (a very nice book, esp. for indians).

but personally i do not know if that is the case...

I think extra-curricular activities such as sports and others not-related to your field of interest are only relevant when you're applying for undergraduate studies as a means of diversifying between students who don't have a lot of info on their CV because they are still young.

hey nice valid point. thanx but what I wanted to knw is abt the scholarship part. I know there are numerous tennis scholarships like in which Shikha Oberoi(cousin ViVek Oberoi) has gone in US to study, I thought there must b a baseball scholarship. I never meant gaining admission only throught the certificates. But anyways thanx a lot.

Again, I think most (of not all) sports scholarships are for undergraduates students only. In Graduate School, they want you to become an expert in your chosen field, not to be an all-round educated person, that's what college is for. I even think you won't be allowed to compete, maybe they have special graduate competitions, but I doubt it, most grad students are just too busy reading, writing and taking courses, the sports they do is recreational.
