Kaplan Math Workbook 6th Edition
I've bought the Kaplan Math Workbook after browsing its contents as it looks like a good book for a "non math" person without over-simplifying like Princeton Review does.
Has anyone used it and had success? What I like about it so far is that concepts are presented in straightforward way but the problems are fairly difficult as opposed to Baron's which presents the concepts in a difficult way so that one can attack the convoluted format of the ETS problems. The challenge with the Kaplan approach is to understand how to adapt basic knowledge of number theory into actual problem solving. The best way is to do a lot of problems and fortunately they give you a lot. The limitations of difficult areas not covered I'm not worried about b/c I don't care about a perfect quant score but I do aim to score somewhere in the 60-80th percentile on a retake. Am interested in anyone's opinions of this book. |

I worked through the book and it gave me a solid understanding of all the concepts tested. Especially the word problems, they give you tons of practice. I checked Amazon and it looks like most of the new test prep books are going to hit the shelves the second week of June...I'm not sure about a new math book though.
The only downfall is it doesn't hit much probability/combinatrics, but honestly I don't think those questions are very common the GRE. For advanced topics, the GRE only expects you to know surface material, and even then the questions aren't that complex. |

I own and like the book. I echo the sentiment that it is lacking in statistics areas. I haven't had GRE success because I haven't taken it, but I got a 790Q on the second CAT test I took and that book and the problems on this site are the only materials I've used.

I've started studying for the GMAT last weekend and wanted one of the first things I did to be Math review. Why? I didn’t want to take a full length diagnostic when I knew the results would be skewed by the fact that I hadn’t looked at math problems in almost 10 years.
After a quick search, and a little online research I selected the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook 6th edition, because it had a good mix of what many other people in this thread mentioned:
It did what I needed it to do. I was not gravely disappointed and I was not amazed. Some things to note:
Overall the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook is worth getting, particularly if you feel like you haven't done math in ten years and are looking to reestablish a good baseline. Having said that if you’re looking for a comprehensive Quant solution to score over a 750, this probably won’t be it. **if you decide to get the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook, Sixth Edition here are the errors to look out for:
++Note: This Q24 from Data Sufficiency Test Two already has an answer on p. 340. This answer does not agree with the misplaced answer on p. 332 that relates to the same question. In other words, this book contains no answer/explanation to Q24 from p. 320, and gives two different answers/explanations for Q24 on p. 324If anyone knows the correct answer/explanation for Q 24 on either Data Sufficiency Test One or 2, please post it here in reply. To all – May your mind absorb, and your scores increase. |
