People are eating a variety of foods these days which encourages the flow of food from every corner of the world to a local supermarket. Do you think this is negative or positive development? Why?
As a consequence of the globalization, it is normal to have products from every part of the world. Indeed, our multicultural societies are demanding it and we are accepting it without complaining because we take advantage on it. From my viewpoint, the growth of international food has both positive and negative developments.
Nowadays, people can get to know different products from abroad coming from several cuisines like Far East cuisine. Indeed, people do not need to travel to foreign countries in order to experience new tastes. They can buy the foreign products they want in the local supermarket.
Furthermore, currently people can eat products out of their specific season. They do not need to wait to a specific time to eat products from that period. For instance, we can eat tropical fruits during all year because tropical countries are producing in more quantity to export them to the entire world.
However, there are also drawbacks that people should be conscious about. For example, supermarkets and retailers may buy cheaper products to international producers instead of purchasing those products to national producers. If retailers and supermarkets buy local products, they will improve their own country’s economy and it will avoid future economical problems.
Adding to this, several products produced in foreign countries are produced under undignified and underpaid job, without job quality and job conditions being supervised and controlled.
In conclusion, having products from around the world is not only good for global economy but also is good for individuals’ taste because they have more choice of products to try. Nevertheless, people must be awareness that local products are also good (even better sometimes) and those products might help improving local economy.
