Question:

Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

People's views of the function of tertiary education varies as to whether to resource graduates with knowledge and skills specific for their future career or just to allow accessibility of knowledge beside the point of whether it is valuable for the future or not. In my opinion, the chief function of tertiary education is to equip its graduates with both major theoretical knowledge together with the integration of enhancing learnt soft skills, which are both crucial for better employability and life in general.

Tertiary education providing theoretical knowledge to its graduates is important for their future career because it serves as basis for graduates in carrying out certain principles. In other words, it provides a better understanding of why processes are being carried out to come up with a desired outcome. For instance, a business system analyst must be knowledgeable with computer programming and system evaluation in order to work with its company’s computer system and business procedures in order to have a clear picture of how the company can operate more efficiently, thus making the analyst an important asset to the company’s success.

In addition, the enhancement of learnt soft skills is one of the incredibly significant functions of tertiary education, as these skills will contribute to graduates having a competitive edge in their respective careers and even in life. Moreover, with today’s increasing demand for professionals, graduates with more developed soft skills are in demand by employers therefore, increasing the graduates’ chances of acquiring a high-level job. For example, a registered nurse with excellent collaborative skills can work well within a workforce of multidisciplinary healthcare team is likely to land a job in a specialized health care unit.

In conclusion, the supreme function of tertiary education is resourcing graduates with theoretical knowledge and strengthening their soft skills will help them in performing tasks vital to their career and will elevate their employment opportunities in the future.
