640 on GMAT (date 11 June 2009 ) :(
Hey All ,
Just took the GMAT today and scored 640 (score in my last attempt was 620) .Feeling so down and low that I have been in tears since getting out of the exam centre . Breakdown Q 40 (80%) V 36 (76%) Overall : 76% I had worked really hard for this exam and it ended up in a not so good way . Just wanted to check if you think this is good enuf score , I am planning to apply to INSEAD , Singapore and ISB, Hyderabad , India . I think I can project my professional achievements pretty well as I have been a consistently above average , in the top 5 if I may say so ... right from school days till date.. hence getting 640 was something that I couldnt digest at all ... not sure where am I lacking for the practice tests that I attempted gave me a score of 710-720 all the three times I attempted them . Any thoughts are more than welcome ... Thanks . |

Hi Nandini
Do not get disheartened by your GMAT score. GMAT score is just one part of your application. See this excellent post: GMAT Scores: How Important Is Your GMAT Score? If you have energy and preserverence, you can attempt a retake, since unlike GRE, most schools take the best score rather than average. All the best. Madhur |

Nandini,
Don't get disheartened - if you have some time, you should definitely retake the exam. My friends who have got admission in both ISB and Insead had scores of 730 and 750. I would say try to reach the 700 mark especially for ISB, as you are competing against Indian students with whom you typically see a very high gmat score. Even with Insead, I actually visited INSEAD campus when my friend was applying to speak to admissions counselors, and they do recommend to have a 700 gmat. So with that said, I wish you the best. I too myself gave a pracitce exam and am so disheartened with the score I received, but I will say persistence will take you there and over the goal line. |

Hi Nandini,
I think it is unfortunate.. I have read it at so many places how people were not able to give their best at first attempt - It is pressure stress or fear.. and whatver it is .. it is completely justified.. Few of my friends who did not score good at first attempt told me how they were broken after that... I suggest you to take rest for 5 days - may be a vacation or watch movies.. if you stay away from home, go to your place, meet your old friends and family.. - You will find yourself fresh and strong enough to try again.. Then, practice for 15-20 days again and give your shot.. I am very sure that you will achieve your target score.. Just take a breath and give a last push.. Best of luck!! |

Hi Nandini,
I think you still have one more shot left inside you.If you look at your score you have already scored 36 in Verbal and you are at 40 in Quants.I think you can reach 48 in quants easily by putting in some efforts.I am not sure what strategy you are following in Quants.I have some documents in Quants which may be of help.In case you need them send me a PM with your Id.Hope u would give it a thought and make a wise decesion. I would like to echo what PS36363 said. It is easier to improve on the Quant score. Like In Quant to move from 40 to 49 is way easier than In Verbal. So in my opinion if you concentrate on quant then 700+ is within your reach.

I agree with all..you deserve to have one more chance ..since you are in India, have a look at R.D.Sharma book for 9-10 std ..I am sure even if you complete that book ,atleast 45 in maths would be assured ...based on my experience, I would say you need to relook at your strategy during the examination ..I think you are taking it too hard ..just consider this just an another exam in school, in which you have done very well ..just cheer up ..you got 1000s of Test magicians with you
