Just Finished my GMAT June-18,
Hello People,
I just took my GMAT ( June-18, 09) and the score is 720 (Mannn, it looks even better when I type it out :-P) Anyways, split is Quant 49, Verb 39. To be very honest, after clicking on the last answer, I wasn’t sure at all as to in which range my score might be in. Anyways, keeping my excitement aside for the time being, I would like to share what I think might have worked n might have not worked for me. Maybe something in it for some of us planning to take their GMAT. I took my date at the beginning of this year and I had planned to kick off studies three months before the test. However, I was only able to start two months before the test. I guess it doesn’t matter which material you start with because first week or in my case first two weeks were merely warm-up. I started with 580 on Princeton test (the one that is available for all to take on their website). I didn’t have a set target in my mind then but I had been told 700+ is what you should look for. I knew I had to look for 700 but wasn’t sure if I’m good for 700. I worked on regular stuff we all do, to start with it was Princeton review ( Math and Verbal workouts) and their tests and then any random material I got online. I was doing very well on Princeton tests and then I switched to 800score test. That rock-bottomed my scores at the beginning. I had seen 700 on Princeton tests but I wasn’t able to cross even 600 on 800score. However, it was useful to get to know some real tough math questions and way to go about it. In the middle phase, I was focusing on some more tests ( only to be able to sit in one place for that long and not let my concentration drift, trust me if you are getting back to studies after long …this is your biggest challenge than most of the others) . In the last leg of preps, I did a bit of Kaplan. It really improves your verbal. More than improve I would say gives you confidence and broadens your range when it comes to sentence correction n arguments n RCs n stuff. Lastly, I picked up OG and ran thru it in the last five days ( I recommend you not to do this, give it enough time please). I took a few other not so standard tests and scored on an average 700 and my confidence was sky-rocketing. ( Trust me, if you are feeling so comfortable then you are getting ahead of yourself, maybe tests are too easy ) Now, in the last three days, I took my first of the GMAT Prep test ( from the downloaded software from the mba.com) Now, interesting thing is, I got 700 in that test but I didn’t feel confident any more. Because, the difficulty level of material I had worked on was way to low as compared to the latest GMAT stuff. I brushed up a bit and took second of the test on GMAT Prep and got 640 (messed up verbal this time). Not a good score to get a day before your test. But I guess now I can say it happened for the best, I learned out of it, I had made some horrible mistakes in verbal and had decided to alter my strategy for no good reason just a day before the test. So I told myself not to do that on the test day. If you are studying for GMAT and you have a few weeks, I suggest identify your weak areas and pay more attention to them. Have a plan / strategy, enhance it thru your practice and stick to it no matter what in your last week. Powerprep tests are like trump cards, use them very carefully. If you spend total of ‘X’ hours taking tests then at least try and spend ‘X/3’ hours analysing them and making notes which sorta come handy. I just joined this site and feel that I should’ve a month back. I’ve shortlisted Insead, Esade(spain), HEC France, UCLA Anderson and NewYork Stern. Any thoughts from the senior members here about what to do next …. Please share your experience of applying, essay writing, shortlisting and so on… Cheers, N |

> Madhur,
Thank you. 800 is a good practice much better than princeton I most humbly and respectfully would say. Difficulty level was certainly closer to the real test. However, I most humbly and respectfully would really suggest quant from Manhattan GMAT. manhattan's s/w tests for GMAT. > Cubicle Thank you for your reply. I'm not part of IT pool. I work in Sales n Operations field, although I'm an engineer. N |

I'm referring to Manhattan GMAT, the online s/w that lets you take 6 tests online. It costs $40. Tania, I suggest have your areas of weakness and strength figured out by then. Focus on weaknesses and consolidate learnings. Take a Full Length Test at least every four days. Keep track of your mistakes. Consider writing a couple of essays each week. And take those two GMAT PrepTest when u think u are best preped. wish u all the very best ya... at least that what seemed to have worked me. N |
