Speechless: 560 ( Q 49, V 19 )

I gave GMAT today and many of you might guess, I was simply speechless after seeing my score.

I just cannot imagine that score in verbal considering that I finished the verbal section with 5 minutes to spare and was elated with my performance on my verbal. I ran out of quant in time with 3 questions to spare. I would admit that verbal section was tricky, but I was able to locate the errors in most of the questions in verbal and was confident of 35 + in Verbal.

I wouldn't say the whole test was easy or difficult. I found it comparable to Manhattan GMAT tests on which my average scores were:

Manhattan GMAT 1- 6:
730 Q 46, V 44
700 Q 47, V 38
670 Q 47, V 34
680 Q 48, V 34
710 Q 45, V 41
730 Q 50, V 39

This was my first and the last attempt. I cannot consider a retake because I believe this attempt was not only my best preparation but also best performance on the test.

I have dropped the idea of GMAT and instead I might pursue MS for which I already have a decent GRE score.

Wish you all, All the best for your future.

Madhur

Madhur
My first attempt was 640 (Q50 V 26)
and its been 8 months since then i have been trying hard......dnt loose hope....you can do it and i believe the kind of explanation you gave me for SC was fabulous.......and you deserve a lot better

whenever i thought of quitting GMAT only one thought came in to my mind
ALL MY LIFE I WILL THINK THAT I WAS NOT ABLE TO CLEAR ONE EXAM....may be one try more and i would have achieved it...even if you achieve a lot more even without taking GMAT but this thing will always on your mind that you didnt try....

I am shocked for the second time now !
First was when I read Abhishek_mumbai's post and now when I read yours .

You both had taken great efforts and it is hard to believe your efforts did not pay . I dont know u guys well but definately know that you deserved more .

I would just like to tell you Madhur that even though we would not understand your feelings as you do , Think very carefully before coming to any decision . I would say dont take any decision in such an emotional state .

Take care .

Thanks all for your words.

Firstly, I am not at all emotional or disappointed, I am simply shocked !!

Had the test been hard, or I would have become nervous or anxious, or I would have not given my best performance on the test ,It would have made sense for me to get disappointed.

But I am simply shocked. I belive, I gave my best performance on verbal section ever !!!

The reading comprehension's on which I usually perform poor due to poor comprehension ability, I was able to comprehend perfectly in the actual test, which even boosted my morale during verbal section. I had practiced so much LSAT critical reasoning's that critical reasoning section although hard was a breeze for me. Sentence correction I would say were tricky, but I think must have got minimum of 60% correct.

The only thing I can imagine would have happened is 99% of my correct answers would have fallen on research questions. But even then, I am confident that I correctly answered many questions on verbal to increase my score.

The irony is that , almost 5 months ago, before start of the preparation I gave GMAT prep I to determine my weak areas and scored 580.

After 5 months of hardwork and improving on all the areas, I gave GMAT Prep II couple of days ago and got 750.

Now here actual test has put me on 560

Does any one know If there is diagnostic available in GMAT (similar to GRE) to review your actual performance on test?

I will be highly curious to see this.

I tell you what...I have had two GMAT attempts. In both the attempts my quant score was 50 and verbal got only worst 25 to 22 ! you end up scoring more in RCs than in SCs and CRs...SCs are getting very difficult...so my advise is spend more time in critical reasoning since SCs will anyway go wrong - and this strategy works to get your score above 30...try this ....dont spend more than a minute on SC questions....spend more time on CRs and RCs..In the end its the time pressure that the GMAT puts on you. So to use your time wisely, it is very important to know your own abilities beforehand...and this is a thumb rule ....you'll invariably do well in quant and verbal everything is then just messed up ....think of this....if you were to appear for verbal first and Quant later...this will singnificantly improve your score....guess GMAT testing body should offer this flexibility to choose the sequence....I'd rather appear first for Verbal and then for Qunat and then for Essays.

I am sure 560 isnt your limit. Think about it, this is the lowest you can get. Next time you attempt, it will be more than this for sure.
Practice SC. Practice a lot. critical reasoning and RCs are relatively easy to handle. BTW how were the reading comprehension passages? Going by my GPREP test, I have seen that when I am not doing good, the reading comprehension passages tend to get smaller and easier. Did you see anything like that?

Hello Madhur,
I am also shocked just like you.. I was expecting lot better than this. You know that over the time, I have learnt that you can't just rely on your preparation - luck is a big factor in GMAT.. I suggest you to give it one more chance and let your fate guide you if you don't get good score.. I was broken just like you few days ago.. If you wish something badly enough, you will get it - sooner or later.. Fight for it one last time..
go for it.. your 700+ is right there waiting for you.. and in fact, most of people here have appeared in GMAT twice..
