680. (q-49,v-34).
Without any delay i thank erin for this platform and all you wonderful guys for your inputs and feedback.
When i started my preparation for gmat, my target was 550-575. am not sure why, may b because everybody around me never crossed 550. anyways, wandering on the internet, which i do very often, got me to testmagic. and believe me, few days of visiting testmagic changed it all in terms of my attitude and approach towards gmat and that is why i want to thank u all, bcoz if it was not for u guys i would have never been aware of my ability. From my experience, i can say is tht if u want to score above 700, verbal is very critical, which does not mean quant be taken lightl, but it seems every1 is scoring 48's n 50's in quant, so doing tht is not tht difficult with practice, but for atleast me, improvement in verbal was never quite there. i scored 34 in my 2nd gmat prep which i gave about a month ago n ditto was actual verbal score. if i were to score 37-38 i would have crossed 720 may b. in short, 40 on verbal is equal to 50 on quants. so go for tht 40. I prepared for about 4 months but had to take a couple of long breaks of 20 days to month in between due to immigration to canada n further settling here during the same time. The books which i recommend are : 1. official guide - 12th edition. very critical if u want to score above 650. 2. official quant review. 3. manhattan gmat sentence correction. 4. lots and lots of practice from virtually any material. thts not a long list but then its the very important without which it will be very difficult to score high. the only thing tht i did apart from doing these books over and over again(i did manhattan gmat about 7-8 times) was visiting testmagic regularly and doing the challenging problems postd here and looking on the net for quant problems. other thing tht i want to share is tht i was told by people tht prob and permutation are coming up very frequently these days esp if u score high. thts rubbish. i scored 49 on quants and faced 1 prob, 0 pnc ques and tht too ques no. 34 if i am not wrong. In quants Data suff. very important which i knew before tht test. after my 1st 3 ques which were PS i faced about 20 straight DS ques. which gave me a feeling tht i was doing well. This is my 1st attempt at gmat. i hope i dont have to give it again, but i have this feeling if i were to give it again, i would definitely cross 700. may b i was nervous or may b not tht confident of myself which reduced me to 680. Lastly, trust me guys, GMAT is not a demon or some beast which many Earthlings think it is, it is a highly structured and standardaized test and fooling GMAt is very dificult, but if u work hard and practice like crazy there r every chances tht u will score above 700. If anybody is from canada n looking to apply for b-schools in canada, por favor, El Seņor get in touch. The unlimited potential that lies within you, let it slumber no more. Best of luck guys. Testmagic rocks. |

Congrats Chintan. Your story is an inspiration to me.
I gave GMAT a month ago and got a pathetic 540 (45/20), planning for a retake within a month. Still fighting with my self confidence whether I will be able to crack it. I want to get at least 650 and my low self confidence is putting me in dilemna. I am also planning to apply to Canada and then migrate there. Hope to get some piece of advise from you. |

congrats india_chintan ... well done ... good score ....
Can I ask if you found the test difficult compared to what is the generally held belief of GMAT ..... I ask this question as I have seen many posts from people who have taken the GMAT in the last few days and many of them mention that the GMAT is tougher than before, say even a month back .. specially in quant and in verbal as well .... Any views .. ? |

No. not at all. Atleast not for me. I gave gmat prep the day before my test and socred 710, 48-q and 37-v. What i can say for sure is, assuming all other things normal and u dont get really unlucky tht day, u should score around + - 40 to thy gmat prep score. I never socred 49 on quant in any of gmatprep's but still scored it on the actual test - wht bout the gmat getting difficult. Please dont get bogged down by all tht rubbish tht gmat is getting difficult. The bottom line is, its a standardised and an adaptive test and if u want to score good, be prepared to face difficult question. Best of luck buddy. |
