710 (Q49, V37)

Gave my GMAT on 26th...disappointed with my score, but dont know if will take another chance.

I would like to thank 800Bob, gmatissimple and madhur_ahuja. for their posts and helpful suggestions...!!!
This is a great forum!!!

More about me:
India male, 6yrs exp. 3+ in US, Financial Services industry.

My Test prep scores
GMAT Prep1 :730 (1 month before exam)
MGMAT1: 710
MGMAT2: 740
GMAT Prep1 retake: 780( had a few repeats in verbal)
MGMAT3:690
MGMAT4:670 (tried during work hrs...bad idea)
MGMAT5:730
MGMAT6:730
GMAT prep2: 770 ( 2 days before exam, had one verbal passage repeat)

Some tips:
1) The biggest weapon of GMAT is the duration, it takes loads of stamina to stay focused for 4hrs especially if you have been out of school for many yrs...try studying at a stretch for long hours. the first GMAT prep i gave i couldnt even read the last 10 Q's on Verbal.
2) Never trust a test score if you have just taken Q and V and not essays. For 8 of my 9 exams i attempted essays and it made V very very difficult.
3) You are allowed to take longer breaks on practice tests, dont do that on real thing you are very pressed for time and your whole planning goes haywire, i didnt take many breaks in practice tests but didnt time them and this was a mistake i made.
4) Manhattan GMAT Quant Q's are very good practice and i believe if you can score 48+ on Manhattan GMAT quant then in gmat you can get 50-51. Verbal is not as representative. I found verbal more like OG difficult section Q's.
5) Pace yourself, take it easy for last few days

D-Day:
I was not feeling well for 2-3 days before exam. I took my date 3weeks later and worked very hard for those 3 weeks. My plan was to give one practice test every other day for next 3 weeks...and study and work 6-8hours everyday...which i did and got burned out by the end. Lost 3 minutes on Q section...but rushed later and finished with 2 mins to spare...
Verbal had last 4 Q as critical reasoning and just wanted to get over with.

Let me be the first to congratulate you.
Congratulations .

It is indeed a decent score.

Please answer the following questions:
1. What have you done to crack reading comprehension and critical reasoning?
2. Do you have any special technique for reading comprehension and critical reasoning?

Thanks.

Congratulations Vinayak! I have the same question as Gmatissimple. I'm going to be taking the test this Friday and I could really use some good advice.

Thank you!

I never had timing issues on Verbal, I actually had to slow myself down. reading comprehension I used Gin's approach. I believe that to be good in reading comprehension you need to understand the passages well and that can be done only with practice. I could read a long passage in 4-5mins and answer Q's in 2-3mins and get 90% accuracy. I tried LSAT passages few days before exam and it helped.

critical reasoning: when i tried to solve critical reasoning from OG 10 long time ago i got a 90% hit rate and for OG 12 it was 93%. I think this is where i screwed-up when it mattered. If i do take exam again i will use powerscore bible and try more LSAT passages. I think critical reasoning comes with practice. Also when you do OG critical reasoning read their explanation it helps to ustand how GMAC does it.

In practice i always had like 5mins to spare in my Verbal section, tried to slow down on real exam to just finish in time.

The reason why most people do well in Verbal during inhome setting and do bad in exams is due to the fact that it is last on the exam and you are very tired. Doing critical reasoning/reading comprehension one at a time is different than doing it after 3.5hrs of exam...

Infinite7: try doing LSAT reading comprehension passages...even if you dont get many correct dont worry it is a great practice.

Hello Friend,

Can you please tell me whats the best way to start off with the GMAT. Do I need to prepare and improve my vocabulary like for the GRE ( Barrons wordlists etc). And then start doing the practice exercises?.

I purchased the OG and it will arrive anytime soon.
Thanks!

Take OG diagnostic test and you can then judge what you should work on.
