Angry Miserable 560!! Need help

Hi All,

I was a silent observer of this forum but never bothered to join it but now after getting 560!! a shocking score I had no option but to be more active and use this forum .

My prep involved OG 10,OG11, OG12 , Kaplan and Princeton Verbal Review Books, Manhattan SC and of course Test Magic.

A friend of mine had already score only 620 on test dayafter getting 680 in Manhattan CATs and that made me very tensed. AWA was easy , but friends GMAT has become tough , I somehow goofed in Quant , did first 3 correct then a DS bold me , I panicked with so many DS with inequalities coming my way ,I did not prepare well for Geometry so took a lot of time for some geometry sums . By the time I had finished 20 questions I was running out of time , only 15 minutes and the rest of all had to be attempted I panicked and guessed without even thinking . I was sure I am gone in quant.

I took the break to prepare mentally for verbal as I knew it could save me. I got an SC then more SCs, a few CRs and I thought I am doing well then I got reading comprehension , thought I did well in that too, took a lot of time for first 20 questions so that I do not make a lot mistakes, again same story , ran out of time , had to guess fast the last 21 questions as I had only 25 minutes!!! I was expecting a 37 in Verbal

I have never got below 650 in GMATPrep , took it multiple times with resets , even crossed 700 once .But the test day score shocked me 27 V and 42 Q , I was devastated .

Please helpe me guys I am desperate to do well, my friends are laughing at my score actually even I cant beleive this happened to me .

Abhishek Mumbai , madhur_ahuja , gmatissimple , rk1234 you all are great gurus , please suggest study material with strategy to touch atleast 680 if not 700 .

I plan to retake in early November again but I want to be sure that I succeed this time at any cost.

Friends work hard a lot has changed now .

You need not panic. Most of the test takers do not perform to their own expectations because they are not familiar with the GMAT test environment. Also taking a test e.g. GMAT prep while sitting at home is altogether different from the real GMAT in a totally unfamiliar environment.
I would therefore suggest you to identify your weak areas and try to improve your performance with parctice. One should fix a test date only when he is fully prepared. Once you gain speed, try for second attempt.
All the best.

I feel sorry that you didn't score well.. but this was your first attempt.. It happens with many people. I agree to what 123rk34 said above.. that actual test environment is very different from your room.. Take it as learning and start preparing again.. You really need to find your weak areas... I have myself witnessed it that quantity doesn't matter in GMAT.. I spent many months solving any questions that I could find.. I solved Kaplan, Princeton, 1000 SC, 1000 critical reasoning, 1000 reading comprehension, Nova, GMATPreps, MGMATS, PowerPreps and many other notes and my CAT quant books.. but I couldn't raise my score.. Then i realized that i was doing same mistakes again and again.. I started reviewing all incorrect questions I ever did and my scores has started going up. In all, I can confidently suggest you that more study material won't help you.. You need to go through every incorrect question you did till now and solve it again, make notes what mistakes you are doing and fix them individually.. Make small tests of 30 questions - each of critical reasoning, reading comprehension and SC and solve them and review your mistakes..
There is no easy way out but your scores will surely be high next time if you study religiously.
for now, take some rest for few days.. It's festival season in India.. enjoy them and get some fresh air.. I have started believing more in God since my last attempt - may be that help me this time..
Bye and take care.. You will do well and don't bother about your friends..

you can borrow them from your friends.. I am sure someone you know would have given this test.. It is very popular.. (I am assuming that you are in India).. if you are not from India, there are other equally good books in market. I need to see the names on my shelf. I will post if required.
