Got 570 (Q 43, V 26)
Hi,
Here is my debrief on my test. I prepared GMAT using standard materials (Official Guide, Kaplan and Manhattan SC). I reached the center before one hour of the scheduled time. I started my exam at 8.45 Am. The essay was pretty easy and was able to complete well before the stipulated time. Then I took 8 min break. I started my quant and the questions were easy. Around 7th question, I got a word problem and from then on the questions are difficult. Many questions are very lengthy. After my 10th question i was left with 40 min, I rushed to complete rest of the questions and at the last 10 min, I was guessing answers to few of the difficult questions. I got too many word problems. I was not able to complete the test and I left 2 questions. I took break and was relaxing myself after tiresome quants. I started my Verbal(my nightmare). First 2 questions were SC and third was a reading comprehension which was small enough (about 2 paragraphs and 300-350 words). I was getting CRs and Scs randomly and 8 the question I got a bold face. At 12th question I got big reading comprehension. It was around 700-800 words and was more than 5 paragraph. I completed that reading comprehension somehow. There were also two critical reasoning questions, which ask for the sentence that completes the passage appropriately. I completed my verbal and waited for my score. bang! 570 in my computer screen was starring at me. I was shocked to see that score, as I thought I did well in verbal, if not worse. I got two bold face questions and lengthy reading comprehension and still I ended up with 26. I am planning to prepare verbal in another 2 weeks. I believe I have less accuracy in SC and difficulty in reading comprehension with business topics. I don't want to miss the second round and planning to give another shot at mid of November. Please give your suggestions on improving verbal especially SC. note:I am consistently getting 42 and above in quants. I need to improve in verbal to balance the score. |

am not sure what your target score is but assuming if you are planning to score above 700 or near about that, then you will have to pull up your quant score as well..somewhere around 47+ and hope to get atleast 37+ in verbal. That way it will balance your score..
I think to improve SC for non-native speakers, practice is key. the more you practice the more it helps to apply the rules/syntax in actual questions. Digest Manhattan SC guide page by page. Make a note of the any new concept/rule you come across and revise all rules regularly. One more point from my end is that not everyone is lucky to get a exceptionally good score in both sections. So if you feel you are comfortable in quant try to pull up maximum score in that (in range of 49,50 or 51) and then grab as much as you can in verbal. It will take some pressure of you. But who knows if your day is good you just might perform excellent in verbal and score 40+. ATB. |

Thanks for your wishes. I again went through my Kaplan and GMAT prep test results for analysis. I found a unique pattern of my mistakes in my verbal section. I am starting off well in verbal, but in the mid off the section, I tend to make mistakes consecutively( some 5-6 questions wrong consecutively). I believe that's what is dragging my score down. I also found that the passages with economics and politics were too vague, and I am only able to zero in into two out of 5 choices. I want to improve in these two areas. Do anyone of you have suggestions on best way to improve my reading comprehension accuracy in topics like politics, economics etc.
On quants front, I am unable to manage my time at the end of the quants section when difficult questions starts pouring in. So I leave out 2-3 questions and my quants score gets reduced. I am working on time management of quants section. I believe, I can get 700+ score with proper techniques. Your suggestions will be helpful to iron out my mistakes. Thanks in advance. To: KKjl Bold face questions are the critical reasoning questions where there will be sentence in bold. The question will be to select the answer choice which performs the same function as the sentence in the bold face sentence. People say that if you get a bold face question you are doing good in verbal. But after seeing my score I don't think so. |

Sorry for thy score, but its much more better than mine, I just got 450 (Q..V16) ha..ha..ha. So, my suggestion is to prepare well and take the test again without being frustrated. You know I am targeting 700+ and am sure can do that.
