Stormgal, I agree with you that you would make a fine b-school student. We all know that the GMAT is one big racket and that the only people who love to sing its praises are those who perform well on it or work for ETS. Those people happen to be applying to the top schools around the world or cashing in on the hefty $225 testing fee. Since this exam is one massive cut-off factor for these pedigree seekers, then I tell you what: let the top applicants battle it out amongst each other. I am a firm proponent of offering a standardized test that fits the level (or ranking) of the school to which one is applying. Better yet, why not "negate" the test altogether? Wishful thoughts notwithstanding, just watch, some day someone will try to tell us that the GMAT is a good indicator of leadership potential, too. I would love too see many of today's CEOs and leaders have a go at this test and its "***"umptions.

Stormgal,

You are right. GMAT is not the only indicator of success in business school. I am like you too. I have a good GPA and I am on Dean's List but I am slightly at a disadvantage since english is my 4th language! I learned english from school, books, movies and my boss (an American English professor). If I get a low GMAT due to low verbal because of my background, that doesn't mean I am stupid. The schools that use GMAT as an indicator of success in business schools are the ones that I should call STUPID.

hi BattleShip

Hello everyone !!

How are you all??, I hope you guys must be doing fine, I just happen to read this thread and found it quite interesting, first of all the battlethisgmat’s (called “BattleShip” thereafter ) original post was very informative as I have to take the test in a month’s time.

After reading the replies, I was wondering what happened to the people around here !! I was shocked guys I think we are here to help each other, first of all this thread should have replies that allay the pains of BattleShip not to fight with each other like cute small kids . So, first let me say a few things about BattleShip, and in the end I’ll say a few things about gmat.

BattelShip, man I think you have awesome scholastic record and you are a genius its just that you approached gmat inaptly. I think you had good prep material and this is the kind of material which could actually land you with high scores, but there are two things that are missing in your prep.

First, time management, you studied only two days a week for long hours (this is bad), now considering you are an average normal person then you would forget everything after 5 days break and I don’t know if you did any revisions after this long break. Also, I think you are a busy person that’s why you didn’t give any time to gmat on week days, so, your week days are busy because of your official engagements and your weekends are busy because of your gmat preparation, seems like you had no time to relax during those six weeks of prep, that must have worsened the whole situation.

Second, you said in your post that when I read the question for the first time I asked myself what the hell just I read and read the question once again, dear BattleShip, well again this is very normal and this had been with me too and still happens but only when I am not concentrating, BattleShip, you are not concentrating like you should man you need to learn to concentrate, in this regard only you can help yourself and nobody else. On GmatTutor.com they said something about concentration, it goes like this “before you start to study or start the practice test or real test breath in very deeply while keeping your index finger on your right nostril so that you breath with the left one and then do the vice versa and repeat 3 times and then study, also try this in section breaks. You bet I tried that and it worked for me they say it provides extra oxygen to your brain which helps concentrate on the topic at hand, guess it should work for you too.

I think you should give atleast 2 to 3 hours daily seven days a week and try to make notes of what you have learned so that you can revise also try to record it on the tape so that when you feel tired you can just lie down on your bed with your eyes closed and listen to your recordings this will keep your memories refreshed and you will not forget concepts that you have learned so far. See another mistake that you made is that you didn’t do complete OG this time only 25%, man you must have forgotten a lot of it, and I think you should’ve done the whole of it again atleast 2 times.

Okay, another thing, your verbal is low, therefore, for SC you must have Manhattan’s SC Guide at all costs (its only $27 ), if I were in US I would’ve get it.

Furthermore, you need to practice to read fast and comprehend what you read at the same time, for that you can find material on twinsplitter’s post, there in the reading comprehension section he has given some good links.

Finally, all you need to do is to manage a few things and definitely you’ll get 750+ score I can assure you. Following are the things that you should do:

1- Manage time, be consistent and give 2-3 hours everyday.
2- learn to concentrate (don’t forget that breathing exercise from gmattutor.com)
3- find ways to retain the concepts
4- do complete OG 2-3 times, Kaplan math work book, Manhattan SC Guide for SC, PR and LSAT papers for critical reasoning, PR and material from twinspliter’s post for reading comprehension.

Wish you all the best BattleShip, just do it .

For stormgal, slick and others, guys don’t fight, admit that you have to take gmat whether you like it or not, however, there’s one thing I can say for all those smart people who couldn’t get good scores that there must be something missing in their prep or the way that they have approached gmat was having a flaw or may be they took gmat too easy because they are too smart. Also, I think that gmat is not a sure shot guarantee that a person will perform well in bschool still it gives some information. For instance, it tells the AdComs that this person can read fast and comprehend complex issues, because in bschool all you need to do is to read read read read and read.

Okay everyone, have fun & enjoy your test prep, love you all.

C Ya soon.

Stormgal, You missed the point. I was not arguing for the other side, rather I was showing you how your comment was misguided. Maybe you can succeed in business school. I am not talking about that. What I am saying is that as much as you may disagree, every school is not going to read EVERY application. There must be a modus operandi for sorting these application....it's called the GMAT. It is not a perfect system, but it is the most efficient and perhaps most effective one at this time. And while you might think that the test has gotten into my head a bit too much, I was only illustrating what should be clear to you. You need to get the GMAT in your head to get the score you want. Hemming and hawwing about how unfair and unrealistic the test and application process are will not get you your desired results. You sound like you are intelligent, I only suggest that you focus your being into this test. Maybe you think you are, but like I said earlier, "Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." So no, I don't need to "wake up", you do. My test is done, and I am working apps now. I've seen you on this forum for quite some time and I think you are just focusing too much energy in the wrong place. Good Luck.

Slick, you got a 700+ on this exam after only two months of studying- of course you are going to be "all for it". How one can achieve a score of 700+ in two months, I have no idea, but for all I know, you probably cheated.
The only reason why I'm on this forum for "quite some time" is because I work full time in front of a computer - not because I'm lazying around. And for your info, my application is done - I'm just working on this test.

Hi, Stormgal or should I call you Atari instead , i'll pray for you that you get the high score on gmat. Still, it is not a big deal to get a 700+ in 2 months time it is sufficient, just make sure you can spare 3 hours of full concentration everyday, you bet you'll get through it with flying colors. And i think there's no way of cheating at gmat.

Enjoy your test prep.

Of course you can cheat. I understand that there are websites and bloggs out where people get together to discuss and post real test questions.

Terick, your prayers for stormgal show that you are a nice guy. Getting a 700, however, is not as easy as you think. A very small percentage of all the people who take the exam get a 700 or above. According to ETS, the average score on the GMAT hovers around 520 to 550. The problem is that very few people in that bracket post here, which makes the rest of the world think that everyone is scoring 700.

Stormgal, I got a 7+ because I worked for it. Back in the day I also did quite well in the SAT and ACT because I worked for those too. Maybe you're not getting it because you're not working for it. Now you must understand, I don't mean that you are not working hard. But maybe you just aren't working "smart" enough. 2-3 months is more than enough time to study if done correctly. As for cheating, give me a break. I'll just write that comment off as a release of frustration. And don't cry to me that you work full time. I'm in the military, so I've been working my *** off for quite some time now. You might want to consider writing with less emotion and more thought. You keep missing my point. There is no point in complaining that the "test is not an accurate representation" or anything else. You obviously have to take the test...so take it. Don't whine, cry, or moan about it. You can attack me all you want, but it won't help you. I am trying to get you to see that maybe you need to take a step back and reevaluate how you are studying. Say what you want. I'm done.
