Important Changes to GMAT Delivery Effective January 2006
You may have heard that effective January 2006, ACT will develop the GMAT and Pearson VUE will administer the exam (previously it had been developed by ETS and administered by Thomson Prometric). Although no changes to the exam’s format are currently planned, you should be aware of the recent changes.
Test Registration
You must register to take the GMAT in advance by phone or email. As of January 1, 2006, walk-in registration at test centers will no longer be accepted.
We urge students to register well in advance of when they plan to take the GMAT. Previously, students who waited until the last minute to register were sometimes able to get appointments by calling or stopping by individual test centers. Students won’t be able to do this as of January 2006. We urge everyone planning to take the test to make their test reservations as far ahead of time as possible.
Keep in mind that the dates and times the GMAT will be offered at Pearson VUE centers may be different from Thomson Prometric centers. Most importantly, in 2006 Saturday dates will no longer be available since Pearson VUE testing centers are closed on weekends.
Test Centers
The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) decided to change providers in large part to improve test security and to increase the number of test centers outside the U.S. Pearson VUE will implement new security measures, such as the use of digital fingerprinting. Though the test centers administering the GMAT will change, the number of test centers in the US. will remain about the same. The number of centers outside the U.S. will increase. Previously, some overseas test centers delivered paper exams, and starting in 2006, all centers will deliver exams on computer.
The change in test centers should have little impact on students taking the GMAT in the U.S., except that the GMAT will no longer be offered on Saturdays. Provided there are no problems with the international expansion, access to testing for students taking the GMAT outside the U.S. should improve.
The Testing Experience
Pearson VUE centers have a standardized design, so the testing experience will be largely the same for everyone. The proctor will sit in a booth at the center of the testing room. Each testing room will have from three to fifteen workstations, and large test centers may have several testing rooms.
Test takers will no longer be given scratch paper and pencils to work out problems. Instead, you’ll be given two erasable noteboards and a pen when you start the test. If you fill up the noteboards and need more, raise your hand. The test administrator will collect the noteboards you have and give you replacements.
Finally, minor upgrades have been made to the test interface and the font looks more contemporary.
Score Reports
Test takers will no longer have to wait two to three weeks to get their official score reports by mail. They’ll be able to access score reports and send reports to schools through a secure online system.
GMAC will offer “Paper in a Pinch” score reports for those who don’t have access to a computer. There will be no fee associated with this score report delivery method.
GMAT scores remain valid for five years, and those who have scores from the past five years will still be able to request reports. Scores between five and ten years old can also be reported, though test takers have to make that request through GMAC’s call center.
The reports provided to schools has changed in one way. Previously, if an examinee has taken the GMAT several times, GMAC reports scores from the three most recent exams. Starting in 2006, GMAC will report all scores (including cancelled scores) from the past five years. Based on the information provided, we believe the online reporting system will be an improvement over the current one.
Official Guide and GMAC Software
The 11th Edition of The Official Guide for GMAT Review debuted last summer. The 800 questions in the Guide are retired GMAT questions, most of which have not appeared in previous editions. The new guide opens with a diagnostic section, consisting of approximately 50 Math and 50 Verbal questions. You don’t get a score after completing the section, but you do find out your level of possible performance (below average, average, above average, etc.) on each question type. GMAC also released two supplemental texts - The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review and The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review. Each guide has about 300 questions. The questions in the supplements differ from those in the 11th Edition, though all can be found in the 10th Edition.
GMAC has made an effort to improve the explanations in all of its guides and fixed obvious typos. Two practice exams are available via download and CD, and the software is new. It will go under the name GMATPrep, rather than the current PowerPrep name. The questions on PowerPrep software largely overlap with the 10th Edition of the Official Guide. GMAC says that the new tests have no overlap with the questions in the new guides.
The new guides and software are very welcome - it has been a while since GMAC has released any new questions. The Princeton Review will provide the 11th Edition and both supplements as part of our GMAT courses.

Why change vendors?
While we’ve enjoyed a long, successful partnership with Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) Board of Directors determined that the investment priorities, strategic direction, and capabilities of ETS were no longer consistent with the Council’s goals for the future of the GMAT program. Starting January 1, 2006, ACT will develop the GMAT, and Pearson VUE will deliver the exam.
Who are Pearson VUE and ACT, and why are they good partners for GMAC?
Pearson VUE and its sister organizations deliver 40 million exams and score 80 million essays a year in 145 countries worldwide. Pearson VUE is a leader in global computer-based test administration. The company’s technology investments ensure leading-edge security while providing new services to test takers and business schools.
Pearson, the parent company of Pearson VUE, is the world’s largest publisher of education materials, through such brands as Prentice Hall, Penguin, and Addison-Wesley, and will provide GMAC with new opportunities for information services. Pearson has operations in 55 countries and publishes materials in 17 languages.
ACT has a well-established reputation for excellence and integrity in test development. ACT has nearly two decades of experience in computer-based testing and has delivered 4.2 million computer-adaptive tests to 1.2 million students. Currently, 4,500 universities use the company’s admission services. As a result of the partnership with Pearson VUE and ACT, schools and test takers can anticipate a wider array of information and services.
Will the transition affect test takers or schools before January 1, 2006?
If applicants have registered to take the GMAT exam before January 1, 2006, the test will be delivered by ETS at an existing Thomson Prometric test center. Test takers will continue to receive score reports and score management reports from ETS when candidates designate a program as a recipient of their GMAT scores. Starting this summer, GMAC will begin to share the details of the transition with prospective test takers, including information about new test center locations.
Will access to GMAT exams change?
Yes. The GMAT test will be more accessible than it is today, with additional testing centers outside the United States. In addition, all test takers will have the option of registering for the GMAT test online or by phone.
Will the GMAT test itself change?
GMAC has no current plans to change the format of the exam or the types of questions it contains. The GMAT exam will continue to assess verbal skills with reading comprehension, sentence correction, and critical reasoning questions; quantitative skills with problem solving and data sufficiency questions; and analytical writing abilities with two essays. The test will still be delivered in the computer-adaptive format, and, starting in January 2006, the Council will offer the GMAT test exclusively in this format. No more paper-based tests will be given. The GMAT will remain as valid and reliable as it is today. The scores on GMAT exams delivered by Pearson VUE will be comparable to scores on GMAT exams delivered by ETS.

Hence, a better idea would be to directly contact the ones with whom I have shared these materials (as indicated by few earlier posts) and I request them to play their part in charity.
Thanks for your discretion. As Erin's signature says "I don't mean to be rude, but I simply cannot answer all the requests I receive."![]()
