I actually took the test in march, but I found this site just now. Anyway, on the math section I was scared of running out of time so I actually moved on past a few questions without being reasonably sure that I had the right answer. On the verbal I lost the sense of how well I was doing very early on, so I just tried to just do my best and answered every question as if it was the first one on the test.
Although I'm happy with my score, I still think I can do better. Any suggestions on any relevant material to beef up my math? I don't think anything besides the OG would be useful on the verbal because ETS has a very specific way of thinking about things. However math is math, so there must be other resources out there that could be helpful in getting the 51. A question for the old timers on this board: has anyone here actually gotten an 800? It seems to be so extraordinarily rare, that not too many people seem to even try to lie about it cause they're prob. afraid of sounding ridiculous. Having gone to MIT for undergrad, I have access to the Sloan resume database and a lot of people with high gmats list their scores... well, there was only ONE 800 out of both sloan classes!! Is it that rare? As for how I prepared for this sitting: I got most of my info on the test from the test prep guide reviews on amazon, and combined with my test know-how from high school I concluded that the OG was the only resource to use. (which is something most people on this board seem to agree with) I went through about 1000 of the 1400 questions, but ran out of time near the end. |

I have to agree here. In fact, there's a chance that retaking your test--even if you get a higher score--could hurt your application. If you retake the test with a 760, you are going to convey the image of someone obsessed with scores and grades, which is generally not good.
kdog is right--focus your energy on other stuff to get the rest in tip-top shape. ![]() |

yep I realize that for bschool retaking the test wouldn't make my app any stronger, but i primarily took the test to strengthen my resume right now. it's gonna be a couple more years before i apply to bschool

roborob - you love people who complain about 760? who's complaining? as i said, i'm happy with my score, i just want to make it higher since i think i can do it w/o killing myself too much
anyway, i see from a previous post of yours that you got a 49 on the quant too, so for the purposes of the quanty programs like chicago and wharton, we essentially have the same score stevemills - i prepared for about 6 weeks. i used the OG - i went through all the math and SC questions, most CR questions. i didn't really do many RC since those take me longer than the others and i was running out of time (i had to take it in march since i had to start studying for the cfa) it's pretty important to not study so much that you start losing focus. i think a 6 week run through the OG is perfect to get you into "gmat mode" |
