Yes, Maulik, i think i got you. Why the hell points are "scaled" if they eventually lead to different GMAT score?

If they are "scaled" then they should take into account already number of people who scored the same number of "other, probably raw" points.
Isn't it?

I recently took the GMAT and got a 660. What really hurt me was the lack of any prepration material (and hence my surprise) of probability questions. I have to say at least half of my questions were probability and that was an incredible surprise even though I am better at math. Can someone tell me which resource offers the best prep material for probability q's? Also Official Guide is acronym for which company? I saw sooraj had given them great feedback.

Hmm. Had totally stopped visiting this site.

I guess it has to do with percentage of people who scored the same q50 and v40 scaled points. InSuraj case (in June) there were less people who scored so many points then in my case (August).

That comment, I think is wrong. The score of 800 is the raw score. It shows more or less how many you got right. The scaled score shows the difficulty level of the questions. With 750, I might have got more number of questios right, but the mistakes I made must have been earlier on, which reduced my scaled score. This is my take. Whatever it is, we can't do anything about it. Stop worrying about it and concentrate on your apps.

Also, Sina, Official Guide stands for Official Guide The book is published by ETS. There is link in this site which expands all acronyms, just search for it.

Hello

Folks, The way I understand the GMAT to work is that it starts with questions of average difficulty and increases the degree of diffculty if you keep getting questions correct or conversely, it decreases the degree of difficulty if you keep getting questions wrong.

The range of score increase or decrease also vary with difficulty. Upon getting the first question right, your score increases from 540 (average score of all GMAT test takers) to 640 and upon next qtn right, increase to 690 and then 715 and so on and so on, if you get a qtn wrong it falls back by a certain amount. The score increases taper down as you progress in the test and score increases are higher for difficult questions than easier qtns and decrease just as rapidly for difficult qtns (if guessing incorrectly). That is why it is often quoted that you should concentrate to get the first 8 to 12 questions right (use a reasonable amount of time on them).

The key here is that one should try to get as many difficult qtns correct as possible (not that one has the time to check for the difficulty of a qtn,but if you are struggling, it is difficult). If 2 people answer the same number of questions correctly and receive the same Q and V scaled scores yet one may have answered more difficult qtns than the other then the person to have answered more difficult qtns will receive a higher GMAT score.

I also had this quanundrum when I was comparing my scores against others in this news group. Someone got 760 yet my scales scores were the same but I received 20 points less.

So potentional GMAT test takers, don't get stressed if you constantly keep getting difficult questions, its a good sign that you are getting qtns correct. If you keep getting simple qtns, then you should get worried. The test tries to match your (precieved intelligence) with a score range between 540 and 800, hence the 'ADAPTIVE' GMAT test.

Btw, the example I have given above is for illustrative purposes, it is by no means definitive. The score increases and decreases are not exactly the same as what I have put up. Don't take that as gospel!

If I am incorrect, please do correct me! I don't believe that the scaled scores or GMAT score is based on number of test takers for the month.

regards
