570, post with a difference
Q-46, V-23
Folks, How are you keeping? Read this post only if you have 10 mins of spare time. On 1st Dec 06 I thought to make a career change from IT to management. I work full time as software consultant and commute 4 hrs a day. Ordered few GMAT books and started preparing. Then came christmas break which took 10 full days break as I had already got tickets booked for holiday in london with family. Recovered from depression after holidays and started again after 1st week Jan. Then I started giving the test on kaplan/gmat s/w in 1st week Feb. Realised that mba.com also provides a software which I downloaded in Dec but never used. Due to time constraints I didnt' prepared at all for AWA. Just had few templates and standard lines in my mind. 9th Feb - Got up 6 am this morning, had 2 eggs +toast in breakfast. Took 7 o clock train and reached centre at 8.30am. No last minute revisions. As advised by lads on forum I bought a bottle of lucozade (sort of energy enhancer .....but not viagra) and sweet bars. Completed all formalities, the girl told that there will be 2 breaks of 10 mins each - 1st after issue/argument, 2nd after quantitative. Then after 9 ish the test started. I expected issues to come first but saw the argument instead. So swapped my template and typed good few lines. Finished JIT. Then came issue, that section also worked well in time. I am good at typing so wrote around 4-5 paragraphs with good logic (claim that until I get AWA score). Took break, drank few sips of lucozade and 2 sweet bars. Quantitative - series of bouncers were hurled at me. Looked like Brett Lee and Mcgrath were bowling at Munaf Patel (cricket). Being (I read somewhere 'being' is not preferred in GMAT land.... who cares) an engineer I always thought quantitative would be a cake walk but I found myself guessing at least 8-10 questions and still lagging. When there were around 15 questions left I felt like going to loo but had no choice than to continue solving questions. That added to the pressure and finish wasn't perfect either. I feel that the actual test questions were much tougher than the ones in books. I do remember at least 10 of them.Took second break, no lucozade this time + 1 sweet bars and quick visit to loo. Verbal - was easier than I thought. Looked that I may compensate for the previous section. Encountered 4 comprehensions. one was fairly long and complex. The 4 th one was around Q36. I thought there will be at least 4 question attached to this comprehension, but only 2 question came up which pissed me. Finished that section closely. Then pressed button to submit, closed my eyes and prayed to god for a score of 650. Got only 570. Quantitative - 46, Verbal - 23. This was actually opposite to what I felt while giving the exam. Came back slightly disappointed. The other lads were even worse (two scored 400 and one 565). I had a dream to post a typical message on this website "650 Q-49 V-** , thanking Erin and few others, advising lads to study Princeton,Kaplan,Official Guide (Bible), spidey notes, SC series, Manhattan SC and possibly all available material. Credit my success to my wife and buy a new Hugo Boss suit". The dream has been shattered but no regrets. My score may not be close at all to get into LBS but is good enough to get admission in one of the top 20 college in europe (also ranked in top 100). Being a positive thinker I feel that the real battle starts once I am into there. Enough for today. Worked half day after the test and leaving at 5. I will drink few pegs of Jack Daniels and take family to shopping and movie tommorow. (Should it be "for shopping and movie" OR "to movie and shopping" F***ing verbal....I hate it). Best of luck to you folks. Till then good night. Last edited by Ash1234 : 2007 February 9th at 04:33 PM. Reason: Put scores on top |

Amit - I live in Ireland and am working as consultant for over 6 years. I am targeting Trinity and Smurfit college which are ranked in 80s (still better than IIM,ISB which do not rank anywhere close). These colleges have a criteria of a 550-600 score and a strong cv (which I fortunately have).
Clintonn - I'll surely compile those questions and post them asap. Asit - I would have definitely given another try bcos getting low score is against my reputation. Still feel that unneccesary if I can get into course without that. The gmat experience was however very enjoying and I sincerely feel that touching 700 isn't difficult. It's just the matter of practice for few months. |

Hey Ash,
Thats not bad at all Am glad that it still works out well for the colleges u are interested. Also needed an opinion.. do u think the questions on the real gmat are similar to the ones on og. Bcoz of time constraint i am doing only og 10 and og11...But i plan to study them well. Do u think that should be enough for a score of 650 to 700. Thanks again for thy post and goodluck with the apps! |

Folks, got my score report today and am delighted to see 5.5 in AWA. That was really with no preparation. Just few templates and ready made lines. Happy days.
GMATap- I found quantitative tougher than the questions present in OG. Some of the questions were weird and consumed more time than expected. I'll jot down the questions asap. Just a bit busy at work and applying in colleges. |
