Here is a more detailed summary of my testing experience.
Background: Kansas City, Missouri Varsity Basketball Player for UMKC Civil Engineering Major with Minor in Business Administration Entering Senior Year in the fall, 3.7 GPA I am planning on entering the MBA program at my school (University of Missouri-Kansas City) in the summer semester of 2008. I am also interested in pursuing a PhD in Finance, hopefully starting Fall of 2009 if I can get in where I want To the Test Prep Quantitative Section As an engineering major I was pretty confident going into the test, and I scored between 47 and 50 on all the practice tests I took. However I would still recommend doing practice problems (Official Guide 11 was my main resource) just to become comfortable with the question types so you don't get tripped up on test day. I struggled with probability and still do, which is probably why I didn't get a 50+ on math. Also make sure to practice a lot of data sufficiency questions. If you can think like the test makers it will give you a distinct advantage, and avoid getting "tricked" into a wrong choice Verbal Section Critical Reasoning This was undoubtedly my strength in verbal, I rarely missed a question on any of my practices. That being said it is EXTREMELY important to fully understand the question and the argument before making any assumptions/inferences especially when the questions start getting hard at the 90+% range Reading Comprehension Initially in reading comp I score very poorly. I discovered that I wasn't taking enough time to read the passage slowly and to let the information soak in. After slowing down and concentrating on the passage (convince yourself that the passage IS INTERESTING and it will be easier) I score quite well on the section. The advice in Kaplan Verbal Workbook and OG 11 was very good Sentence Correction Officially my WEAKEST section by far. On my practice tests I would often get 7/16 correct. As an engineering major I have not been required to take an english course since high school. I did almost all the sentences in the OG 11 and the first 100 off the 1000SC. This helped but the thing that helped me the most actually involved my girlfriend. We would go through questions together and talk out loud about what we thought was wrong or right in each question. For me this helped me remember the rules better. We did this right before the test. My score of 41 on test day was the best score I got on ANY of the verbal sections. TEST PREP MATERIALS As far as materials go I utilized this forum extensively in comparing study materials as well as scores of people who were scoring like I was. I used OG 11 as well as Kaplan Premier 2008. The advice from Kaplan on test strategy is good, but their CAT's are a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. All they did for me was ruin my confidence for a good two week span. My BEST Kaplan test was 160 points less than my actual score! GMAT Prep is a must for two reasons. First the screen is exactly the same as on the actual test, and the questions are of comparable difficulty. Even if there are repeats it is worthwhile taking them over and over again. Also the scores are VERY close to what you can expect on the real test. If you have any more questions post here and I will be more than happy to answer them! |
