My GMAT Experience : 770 (49,49) AWA 6.0

Hi folks,
I am happy to let you know that I took the GMAT a week back and scored 770 (49,49). I had posted my experience in another forum, but wanted to post it here also for the benefit of others.

here it goes:

I prepared for ~ 2 months while working full time:

Preparation Methodology

Quant: All about practice. GMATprep extremely good resource for quant

Verbal:

SC: Manhattan SC book is awesome. I think this book alone improved my verbal score by few points.Practice with GMAtprep and ETS paper tests

CR and RC : Just practice with GMATprep and Paper tests. Donot use MGMAT or princeton review for this

AWA:Princeton review format, read a few essays and wrote a few

D-Day Experience

Took an appointment in early morning. Was a little jet lagged the previous day as I had just come back from a 2 week Japan business trip.

so, slept only 4 hours before the D-day

Test: AWA went very smooth and knew I should get a 5.5 or a 6.0.
Took a break and got ready for quant. I am an engineer and have never feared quant. The quant was really simple all the way through. I think I might have made some silly mistakes in the initial questions or this was just my lucky day. Felt it would be a 50 or 51 for sure.

Verbal also went very smooth. My RC's were mostly inference questions and so I knew I was doing ok. Towards the end, verbal was so easy, I thought I messed up bad. Finished with 5 minutes to spare.

Clicked through the survey and voila

770 Q49 V49..pumped my fist..but was wondering how i got only 49 on the quant..I have to say attitude during the exam can be a deciding factor!

Test Prep scores:

GMAT prep 1 (little prep,day 2) 720 Q 48 V 41

GMAT prep 2 (little prep, day 7 ) 740 Q 49 V 42

OG 11 diagnostic test

SC 15/19 ~80% Above average
CR 12/17 ~70% Above Average
RC 17/17 100% Excellent

PS 21/24 88% Excellent
Ds 18/24 75%

OG 11 practice questions

SC strike rate: 84%
CR Strike rate: 91%
RC Strike rate: 94%
DS strike rate: 95%

GMAT prep 1 (reinstalled) 770 Q 50 V 45

GMAT prep 2 (reinstalled) 770 Q 50 V 46

many more GMATprep tests..all mostly 770 or 780

gave some MGMAT tests too.

that is all..any questions..let me know!

Great score. I believe 99th it's percentile, and having equal verbal and math is good from an admissions standpoint. Good job!

Gandalf,

I saw your post on the MGMAT forum and I scored the exact same as you on CAT4, including the Q/V breakdown. Hopefully your comment about that being the most representative is true and I can expect a high score this Thursday.

You said you had timing issues on some of the quant practice tests, did you have that problem on the real test? Do you think that the questions were a different difficulty level or did you focus more on making sure you didn't run out of time?

Thanks,

Ian

Yes, I always rushed throught the last few questions in quant in practice. In the real test, I was focused on attempting every question in quant without guesswork and so went a little fast. I think this hurt me a little in hindsight, as I might have made a few silly mistakesearly on in a hurry.
ofcourse the questions were real easy on the test for some reason!

To do well on GMAt quant you have to learn the fundamentals in depth.
eg: number theorry, geometry, probability, combinations, rates etc.

I think the OG 11 quant review is very good . though very brief. Also, the quant lesson section in powerprep software is very good.

Then, you got to start practicing..mainly from gmatprep, OG11 etc

good luck
