1500 in gre : 800 Q, 700 V.
hey i finished my gre on the 15th of October. It was a good experience in all. The fact that i had to go to another city didn't prove to be much of a hassle.I am a final year BE student doing electronics and communication. I plan to pursue a masters in signal processing. Now that application time has come, I wanted to know if the score is sufficient to get into a good school and if not which schools might not accept this score. I would appreciate a reply.
As far as the test goes, I got my quant section first. The questions were not calculation intensive in the least. The hardest questions we re mostly reasoning based. I aced the first 27 questions and had around three minutes left for the last one. I did NOT pick a random answer (as every book says you should) and I chose to solve the problem instead. By the time i looked up again, I saw the prompt asking me to proceed. Obviously fazed by this sudden and unexpected turn of events, I started my verbal section. Most of the words were from barrons or big book. Nothing that threw me off. I got my first 35 line rc at question nine. It was relatively easy although the answer options were quite ambiguous. I was able to get down to two options and tried my luck. The rest of the section proved to be easy although I did not manage my time very well. I hesitated with an sc questions and the analogy questions were a little dicey. Then i got my second 95 line rc from questions 17 to 20 and immediately another 40 line rc. I had six minutes left for the final 11 questions and went on to mark the answers a little hurriedly. This is what might have harmed my verbal score a bit. Despite the initial lack of time, I finished with a minute to spare. I chose to do the research section so i could calm my nerves a bit and decide how i had done. I had heard that even one unanswered question will adversely affect your score. So i gingerly clicked the accept scores button and much to my relief i got an 800 in quant. The 700 in verbal was a little lower than i was getting in my practice tests but I guess it is a fairly good score. My advice to all test takers if they want to take it is : Dont let your first section dictate your performance in the second one. The break is there for a reason. Use it well. Calm your nerves if necessary or just chalk out a strategy of how you plan to tackle the next section. Staying calm is paramount. Also never give a single question more than four or five minutes. Gre questions dont need that much time to solve. If you find yourself exceeding that, it is likely that you have missed a trick somewhere. Just narrow down your options and take an educated guess. Maintain a brisk pace of working and the test should take care of itself. The sources cited in the forum are all that i used, I did not complete the verbal section in big book and might have paid the price. Just be diligent while studying and calm during the test and you'll do well. Best of luck to anyone taking it. |
