1300 Done, but not very sure what's next

Hello to everyone,

I just got back from my 170 mile trip from a city where I took the GRE General today. I've got mixed feelings about the results, I've got V 570 and Q 730, 1300. There were 2 or 3 problems where I think I dropped the ball, I had no idea how to solve in the 2 min bracket; and at half time I was about 5 questions behind the ideal pace, but I recovered. Except for a sleepless night (not apprehension, but my mind kept functioning and I got NO sleep till the next day, G-Day) I can't put my finger on any shortcomings in my preparation for GRE to answer why this wasn't a stellar performance. I had hoped at least for a Q 760, so I guess Michigan Ann Arbor and Illinois Urbana or anything top 20 for PhD in EE are out of the question. Q730 isn't that bad, but it isn't great either and if memory serves, I saw a recommended Q 750 score for PhD . I have an equivalent GPA of 3.6 (9/10 Romania grading) and only my bachelor and masters thesis as my own research work, no articles. In conclusion should I look at Top 50-100 , or...is there still a chance of some dream EE department at Q730? What do you recommend?

Any suggestions, should I retake for 30-40 more points on Quant? Would that be significant in any way?

If you don't have some good research work or publications, 730Q can raise some red flags. The recommended score may be 750 but anything less than 770 (in my opinion) will have some negative impact. Its completely your call but if I were you I would retake the test and try to score a perfect 800. Also, don't apply to universities lower in rank just because of the GRE scores as they are practically an insignificant part of your package.( but are required for the initial screening)

Thank you. It was also my opinion that the scores are mostly for the first screening, so I guess I have to take it again and make sure I score an 780-800 at quants. Are you at Penn State? I was eyeballing Penn for EE. So I guess over 770 is a must for Penn too.
