Department code not needed for TOEFL?

Some universities mention only Institution code and say no department code is needed!

Does this mean, even if we mention any department code while ordering for score reports @ ETS, it will not be considered by the university or if we mention any department codes, the scores wont be received properly by the university?

Heh, I guess this could be equally applicable to GRE scores as well. Nevertheless, I don't think it is a serious problem. If you just add a department when the university doesn't need one, you are only asking the scores received by the university to be directed to a specific department. If the university doesn't have a department-level distribution of scores, then your scores will not be forwarded, that's all. At least, that's what I think is the procedure. Anyone with better knowledge of the mysterious workings of the admissions process is welcome to shed light on this.

I mailed one of the universities that do not need a dept code and they said as long as the institution code is mentioned they will receive my scores. No matter what is filled in the dept code of the request. So, this shows scores will be sent only to the university and if needed they will forward it to the specific dept or upload the scores in a central database which can be seen by all departments.

If this works fine, there should not be a problem I guess. Lets see..

And a suggestion to the moderator/owner/controller/whomsoever it may concern..

GRE forum has only the following sub forums:

1) Just Finished My GRE
2) GRE Math
3) GRE Verbal
4) GRE AWA

So, general questions like the ones I asked recently tend to fall in the "Just Finished" section, which is mainly for debriefings.

So, for general questions and for clearing other related doubts regarding GRE, a new sub-forum can be formed.

Luma is on the way!
I recall when I registered for TOEFL, I provided Purdue code in the registration form without specifying the department code and it worked

Regard your remark ... You need to post it in the Feedback subforum.

Purdue actually mentions its department code as 78 for CS!

@ Luma : so, you got your admission sealed at Purdue? What have they told you about funding? I guess you applied for a PhD. Aren't all the PhD students fully funded?

Believe me no. I applied for PhD, got into the Direct PhD program, but still got no funding. Ditto for another one of my friends. Hope that the situation has changed by now Luma

You needn't post in the subforums. You can post in the main GRE forum.

Correct. However, I discovered that after attempting TOEFL.

My Purdue admission came without fund, but under the Spring circumstances I'm satisfied. I was told to contact specific professors who have funded research projects. My plan is to seek at least a partial fund until I qualify for the in-state tuition after one year (BTW, I'm domestic, actually a dual citizen).

I'm giving UIUC a shot ... who knows
