Experimental section
Hi all, i'm new to the forum.
I just took my GRE today and it was the second time taking it. The first time I got pretty low on the verbal so I decided to take it again. My exam today... i'll just say It didnt go to well especially on the verbal section. So I decided to cancel my score. But just after after i finished the verbal and quantitative sections, there was another verbal section. I think I did pretty well on this section (in my standards). Now my question is, if they have one of those new type questions (i.e fill in 2 blanks) does that mean that this last section was the experimental section and thus not graded? or is possible for ets to mark the section with the experimental type questions? It was 30 min 30 questions. I'm not sure whether i should ask ets to revive that score.... Thanks!!! PS: apologies for the double post Last edited by retret : 2009 November 7th at 07:59 AM. Thank you for your reply userx34,
Oh ofcourse I know that I don't have an option to select which one gets marked. I'm just wondering if the experimental section always contains the new type questions. i.e if i had section 1 orthodox format , section 2 with new type questions, does that necessarily mean that section 2 was the non-marked section? or is there no way to tell? |

I don't agree with you. There is no way to know which section was graded and which was not. There is a fair bit of chance that the last section could be the real verbal section.
retret, I would recommend you to reinstate the scores if you don't have much time to take the test again. I know its a longshot but who knows it might turn out good. I thought I did extremely bad in my verbal score and was expecting a score of less than 500 but ended up with 600. So you never know how you did unless you are sure that you got everything wrong. |

It need not necessarily be an experimental section. ETS had announced that it may introduce a new type of question and each test taker may receive utmost one question from these new types. One such new question is a sentence completion with 2 or 3 blanks.
So its quite possible that the last section is the actual verbal part of GRE. I would advise you to reinstate your score. Because, most test takers feel bad once they finish their tests and get surprised to see good scores at the end. However, it's up to you to decide! This is just my suggestion! |

Thanks for the inputs fromcttoupenn and M10TheMist !
My other score was 390v/780q. My latest one, I think I did okay in q-section but I think I got lower this time. For the verbal...the first one was absolutely terrible, my time management was so bad and I basically had to skip some of the reading sections. So I am pretty sure If the first one was marked...I will get lower than 390...and if it was the other one...probably higher.. So I guess it's like 50/50? Ack! this is causing so much distress! It's like flipping a coin to open my future or closing it! Although for the bad verbal score I can kind of make lame excuses saying that my mother tongue is not English, and I am just an international student studying in Canada (although my English is probably better than any other language I can speak), but the excuse wouldnt help if I'm going to complete my 4-year degree in Canada would it?
