Finished the new GRE and experienced opposite of what thought.

Score v520,q760

was fearing about awa and got defeated in others.

Hearty Thanks to the Magician and all those who contributed, since TM was the only source i referred for awa and proved to be of great help! Aleast completed and satisfied with what I wrote.

decided to continue the membership and help others as much as i can.

First was awa as in powerprep, think its always 1st.
Perspective was...don't falter to give comments if any!

"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society." and other i didnt see

points i explained
1)socialization is hindered by factors(in each para)
a)It begins at home-in cases of divorce child becomes aloof and indifferent from society due to lack of love and affection from parents.
b)Culture of certain under developed countries don't let girl child to bloom properly.
c)Curriculum doesn't consider c.s. and personality dev. as important and assume that a child will learn it by itself by just attending school.Certain things like g.d, c.s as a sub.,seminars etc. would nourish the child with socialization which would grow with him.
2)Aspects of Socialization
a)Communication,personality dev.,behaviour,attitude towards society.
b)egs.if an engg. lacks in such skills, he might not explain his brilliant ideas to others or cannot artfully clear his doubts or misconceptions.Often leaders give lenghty speeches even including the page no. of readymade material shows lack of capability of an orator.
3)Advantages-would lead to easy exchange of ideas and all around dev.
completed in 40 min.

Then arg.
The following appeared in a memo from the sales manager of Eco-Power, a company that manufactures tools and home appliances.

"Many popular radio and television commercials use memorable tunes and song lyrics to call attention to the products being advertised. Indeed, a recent study of high school students showed that 85 percent could easily recognize the tunes used to advertise leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants. Despite our company's extensive advertising in magazines during the past year, sales of our home appliances declined. Therefore, to boost company profits, we should now switch to advertisements featuring a distinctive song."

Pointed out many flaws but could mention less but enough.

Then verbal came,
was difficult with some unknown words .3 r.cs 30,80,30 lines. tried to do well but...
Quant was very easy don't know where lost 40.
Again verbal, was easy.
A mystery unsolved which verbal was considered.had started getting above 600 in verbal in preps. and knew almost whole wordlist from barrons. so Depressed with scores!

Are the versities going to change their method of evaluation ?
If so, which section should be important for engg. students?

Don't worry your score wasn't too bad.Hope for the best for awa. I heard this rumour that questions on conic sections are often asked in quant. can u tell me if it is true?

Congrats on your success! Hey, Y was the first verbal section difficult? Did u get words that weren't in the wordlist? Do u think the bonus section will always be a Verbal section? I'm also curious about the changes in the Quants syllabus. Can u tell me wot the new syllabus has in addition??

BTW, U have a good Q score. I think that's more imp. for Engg.

Hi Synthia and Ramya,

some words in analogies and antonyms were unknown to me!
I was not very good at r.c and did mostly 60% of ques correct.so lost score

I had mailed to ets asking about the research sect. in the new gre and they replied that it can be a verbal or quant or another awa.But I think, mostly it is verbal or quant.

The only change is in anal which we all know.Verbal and quant are unchanged.I got 3 r.cs,of 85, 35, 30 lines each in both verbal and other std. type ques.

The quant was actually very easy and normal.It contained ques on topics from barrons math review or which are present in any review.Though I had done conics, no ques encountered.My friend had got a ques on parabola but the basic ques. So i would advice to do atleast the properties of each.Do ques on std.dev as one is freq asked.

do u think i have deviated from topic in issue?Please do ans. frankly i am very afraid!

I heard today that ets is going to resume the old format from jan 2003, is it true?

Hi! I am also new to this forum! Just so thrilled firstly to find a discussion group. I was trying hard, but guess I was just using the wrong search words.

Like another person on this forum, I too have my GRE on the 22nd. Hey, i did not know that the TOEFL was a requirement for gradschools in the US if you're international.

I have lots of questions, so could KAUSHIKR, MANOJBHAVE, SEENYDESAI, and XAERO please respond (and any otehrs who've taken the test in october):

1. Do the first 5 questions count the most in your opinion? All test guides insist they do. what do you think?

2. If so, what were the first five questions in verbal like? any RCs?

3. How many RCs did you guys get and how long? I know that seeny got three RCs of 35, 80, 30? others?

4. When did the 10 minute break come? after the first verbal?

5. Princeton Review and Insider's Guide to GRE CAT (v.good, btw) both insist to either stop after having reached the minimum requirment of questions (24 in verbal, 23 in math) or to guess very selectively, because they say that after this point, the scores dont change much at all, at the most +-30. Kaplan, on the other hand, says that severe penalties are allotted for any unanswered question. What is true? i do face a time shortage sometimes. what strategy should i follow?

6. A Princeton Review diagnostic exam (on their CD) gave me my score changes with each question. I got the first 5 questions of verbal correct and i had a 700 (starting off with 550). My sixth question was wrong and i got a 670. I ended with a 710, after having reached 720 on my 24th question. I finished answering 29 questions. on math, i had a 450 wheni got question 1 wrong and then with question 5 & 6 wrong i ahd a 500. The between #7 & #24, i got #14 and #22 wrong and i got an overall score of 740 though.

7. like a fool, i did my powerpreps as the first step to my practice when i started two months ago. i got a score of 630 in verbal and 701 in math. and this is without very little prior practice or skills. what do you think? is this a reliable score? what does it prophesize?

8. i am worried about my vocab. i have prepared about 800 flashcards and i am learning about 200 word roots, but i feel with every practice exam, i dont know so many words (esp in antonyms where this is a huge disadvantage). any ideas?

9. what are the other new topics in math? somebody mentioned parabola?! where do i learn that from?

10. i need to get at least a 750 in both. verbal and essays are probably more important because i am applying for the humanities /social sciences. but when i took the VERY HARD tests of 800score.com, i got a 530 and 590 -- way below what i normally get...that freaked me out! are these tests at 800score harder than normal?

i know i have inundated u guys with questions, but i would really appreciate your help.

Hey Prakash,

This particular AWA book is avalilable only in limited quantity even here in the USA (atleast I didnot find it in any of the Barnes & Noble stores or Borders stores here in Northern Calif). So I ordered it online from Barnes&Noble (www.bn.com). I am not sure if they ship items to India or not..A better approach would be to ask any of ur relatives/friends here in the USA to get a copy for u and mail it to u (It's around 14 dollars and including shiping u might get it for $20). All u need would be a fortnight with the book (if u really wanna get confident with the AWA) and anyway u cant remember all the essays in the book for the simple reason that it would be plagiarism. U shud remember that the GRE readers would have already read this book and if u try to reproduce the answers then they might consider ur essay as plagiarised.....So I would suggest to read this book for a general idea as to how an essay is being constructed and try to produce ur own.... Also other websites where u might find this book are www.amazon.com, www.borders.com (just to name a few). These are just my thoughts and plans....
