GRE Finished- Verbal 157, Quant 166

Actually I took the exam on may 12 and my verbal, quant. and awa scores are 157,166 and 3.5 . I didn't have lots of time to study but i mainly focused on quant. section. Actually I was hoping to get like at least a 167 or 168 since I am an engineering student and my prep exams were close to these scores. Furthermore I prepared the exam with Kaplan and for the quant. section Kaplan is way more easier than the real exam. I don't know maybe it is just getting harder. Nevertheless, I hope these scores can be enough for the schools that I want, so I wouldn't have to take this stressful exam again.

Hi Aroma, I can hear your saying about practice tests, especially about Kaplan's. I have not taken the real test yet, but have been practicing with Kaplan's lately. I can tell you that my quant scores in two MSTs by Kaplan were 168, and actually I did not push myself for high score then. I was just sitting taking test to score those 168 points in quant. It was only recently that Kaplan's has recycled its question sets and added new quant sections to MST and I went to Quant 154 (!) in the 3rd MST, since I was again in the walking through test mood, made couple of silly mistakes, encountered three ambiguous questions and did not get one graph block completely since they supplied not sufficient data (missed four questions in a row). The 4th MST's quant was 163 but then I pushed myself hardly. I decided not to take the last Kaplan MST test since it's waste of my time and stamina for those sets which differ in their structure and pose ambiguous questions.

I am more interested to know about your Kaplan's verbal score; what was your verbal score in Kaplan? Now that you have taken the real test and scored 157 in verbal which is a good score for the foreigner, you can articulate how close Kaplan's verbal was to the real test, can't you?

To me, verbal section of real GRE seemed kind of easier than Kaplan's. and I was getting close but lower scores in Kaplan MST test. But to be honest I was not expecting this score because I was not prepared for the verbal section, I did not memorized any words. But even before the GRE, my reading skills were good, toefl reading=30/30, so I got all of my scores through reading questions. I can say that Kaplan's verbal section kind of close to the real exam, just a little bit harder.

thanks for the reply, I too think Kaplan's verbal part is convoluted mainly because of SE and TC organization. You mentioned Toefl and put analogy with GRE reading. These two are quite different mainly because one is testing general comprehension and the latter is testing critical reading skills. One is for foreigners (Toefl) and the other is for native speakers. So your 30/30 would worth not much on GRE if you were not actively reading in test.
