My best regards
Have you looked at the edition of the Book? Perhaps it is a pre-2001 publication? Those analytical sections have been long discarded. I suggest you don't waste time on them. Instead concentrate on writing effective essays and keenly identifying all the logical flaws in any given argument.Download the issue and perspective pool topics from the ETS website and practice two issues and three-four arguments daily. Also, have a nice long look at the sample 6 essays on the ETS website and also in the powerprep software. Analyse and dissect them, try to identify exactly what the ETS people expect of you and how those expectations have been handled by the 6-rated essays. It can be very helpful. Good luck to you!

To awhig : I suppose it can be worked out by the counting method but how does one think about all that when a question like this comes up and the time on the clock shows 30 seconds left?! Besides, the burden of a test not having gone too well also keeps hurting one's mind.

Re: Q-740, V-710, Oct-29 : Experiences

One sentence completion question which troubled me somewhat:
(The exact wordings might not have been the same but the idea was similar)

Emulating his father's nervous travels across the five continents, he too indulged in a lot of ________ continent-hopping; he was also engaged, just like his father in a never-ending search for ________ in his quest for physical and spiritual perfection.

Two very close choices that I was undecided on:
1.Frenetic, answers
2.Frenzied, cure-alls

What do you all think and why?
Any guidance, Wasleys?

Restaw, 2.5 weeks is a lot of time!
Check out http://www.aldaily.com and read about 5 essays per day. You will come away with lots of ideas for the perspective essay question.

Also, practice writing one timed essay and argument every two days from today. That will help you to practise thinking fast. Try what I suggested above and analyse the grade-6 essays in powerprep. Check out the PDF download link in the GRE AWA forum that I posted. It contains useful pointers as to how to approach the argument part and gives a language framework.

2.5 weeks of concentrated study, and you will will be more than ready on the test day!

Good Luck!

God Gracious this is really close!!!!!!!

Acording to decitionary FRENZIED and FRENETIC mean the same.

I think it should be second choice as father's nervous travels suggest something frenzied, and cure-alls fits the second blank.

Frenzied and nervous here mean strong urge that makes one hyperactive such that it affects nerves.

I am going for cure-alls because his quest is for physical and spiritaul perfection so as to get rid of all earthly matters and reduce tensions.

What is the answer restaw???

Dingus,

Ummm...

I think I might go for 1, but there is very little difference.

Frenetic and frenzied are used (in UK) to mean the same thing. Perhaps frenetic has a little more to do with the mind and frenzied a little more to do with physical activity.

An answer is not as strong as a cure-all (which is not an expression I would use, I would use panacea).

However cure-alls might be more appropriate in terms of an illness rather than just the imperfections implied here.

But if the activity is really frenzied/frenetic then perhaps cure-alls would be more desirable than simple answers.

So I might go for 2.

(This is what as known as a 'balanced answer' or, in the English vernacular, 'sitting on the fence'.)

As I said earlier, the sentence reflects about unsatiated mind of the subject in question. This is strengthed by the fact that he is going for spiritual perfection. Normally one goes for mental peace if he is disturbed. Acc the sentence, the person is a wanderlust who moves to places for curing his mental ailment. This prompted me for choice 2.

Dear Michael and awhig,

Thanks a lot for the input! I marked choice 2, too. Hope ETS thought so too.

Hi dingus

Thanks for the detailed post, I read it 2 times over to ensure that I don’t miss out on any of the important advice. I have already begun taking a frequent look at the GMAT posts and also visited the site that u mentioned- that’s a useful resource for quiet many things apart from GMAT ques.I know the book that tans was referring to as I am from India – will be purchasing that book soon. With friends like u, econ, tans and others I think nothing can stop me from getting a good score!!

One more thing, I am very eager to know more about ur research area - cancer…. as I being from the pharmaceuticals line am very much involved with the area. May be u can drop me a mail at kinshukpharma@gmail.com and we can have some very fruitful discussions about this whole topic which could benefit both of us!! What do u think??

Apart from that I have some documents and listings about univs including some rankings. I would be more than happy to send u those. I am sure that it will help u a lot in short listing univs.

Regards
Kinshuk
