Hi Guys,
I returned from Delhi Today. Finishd both exams. GRE: Q:720 V:520 TOEFL: 220 - 273 I was a bit tensed during GRE. For TOEFL I was too cool. These too may be minor reasons for the poor scores. Anyway, I'm glad I got it over with. Now, I'm taking some time off. |

Guys, I too got the GRE off my shoulders....Didn't flare as well as I thought I would...Q 770 and V 610...But, I feel so relieved. Its over. Math was really tuf and to all TMians, my suggestion is, try to catch up on about Coordinate Geometry (questions like Y-intercept, X -intercept and how to calculate them when u r given a a point on a line) and also questions on progressions(AP, GP) and apparently yesterday another test taker at my center got questions on Matrices???[8)] etc....Also, there were a few brain teasers in the math section (can u belive it??). Since I signed the confidentiality form, I cant really discuss the exact questions that appeared but, I would like to let u all know that overall Math was really hard..Being a CS major from REC-W(and a GPA of 4.0) and having completed my MS in CS from a US Univ, I found that I could in no way answer a few Q questions.....Back in 98 when I took the paper pencil GRE, I scored an 800 in Q, but now I am bummed, bcoz I was scoring 800 in Q and 700 in V, on my practice tests....Anyways, I guess I gotta accept what I got...

Hi Raghuveer and others, thanks for ur wishes...Raghuveer I actually completed my MS in CS in July 2001 and wasn't fortunate enuf to find a job that wud meet my career goals. So, I decided to go for a second master's in BioInformatics at Stanford and the Profs there asked me to take the new format GRE....So here I am.....
And Bubble(Priyanka) AWA went on well....Both the topics were from the pools, so I didnot find it difficult at all. I am not sure if I can post the topics that I got in the real exam as I signed that confidentiality statement before the exam..If Erin can take time to clarify, I would be glad to share the topics with u all. (I am just a bit apprehensive about sharing them, bcoz thats what led to the cancellation of CS subject GRE in parts of Asia right,so.....) HTH, -Sri. |

Hi Guys,
Thanks a lot for your wishes. Actually, I was pretty deprssed yesterday when I posted the first message. That's why I was a bit too succinct. Now, I'm quite composed and cool. So, here is the detailed message about my experience. I reached Delhi the day before my exam. I got things ready and made it to the test centre in time. I signed the form and went for the test at 8.30am itself. I didn't know the procedure initially and the security guard gave me a queer look when I acted clumsily. That's when I got tensed! I shouldn't have done that . Anyway, I went in and sat down. The centre was very quiet and peaceful. But, that added to my tension! First came the AWA where I got an already known issue topic about politicians having to withhold info from public. ( This was posted by Seeny and I had had a chance to actually critique her essay then!) So, I selected that topic without second thoughts. Finished the essay wel within 30 minutes and made corrections. Went for the arg. topic with a lot of time left. Easy arg topic. about a dairy firm selling high-fat foods. Found easy points to explain. Then came the Verbal section. By now I should have relaxed but no.I kept hesistating whether to go on or not. Then, I finally started. The first few quwestions looked simple but I couln't decipher the right answers so I guessed. That's where I lost the most valuable starter points. Then came the reading section. T'was quite tough. The Q section was simple. I knew almost all answers. But, I really don't know where I lost 80 marks!! Even the DI questions whe were easy! The dummy section was a Verbal. It was simple as most test takers say. But, as we all know, I got the first one scored I guess! I actually didn't have time to finish the Q I lost the 28th question! The V also went quite fast. Atlast I left the test centre dazed. Toefl was the verynext day. I was way too cool on that day. I finished all the formalities very easily and took the test immediately. LIstening and structure where very easy. Same as what we practised here on TM. The reading section was easy too. But, I went very fast and finished with 54minutes left. That's were I flunked. I should have cross checked with so much time left. I got an easy essay topic about a factory being buit in our neighbourhood. Finishe dthe test and got 220-273. That's my account.I'm wondering whether I should go on with the application process or is it a waste with this score!(Some say V is not too important for Engineering students but could be a problem during visa procedure. Erin, I am really indebted to your website and to all TMians as awhole. U were all a great help and support. Thanks. I shall let u all know of my final scores. Thanks again. |

Hi Synthia,
Here's one of way solving ur application quandary (GRE is over, so may be I can say, dilemma now ). First things first, VISA depends mostly on ur TOEFL score and ur financial statement, and since u have excellent TOEFL score u can rest assured abt ur VISA. So dont worry about ur V score and that being a hindrance to ur VISA.....Now about ur admission, U can go ahead and apply to schools like Univ.Of Illinois, Springfield, which is not in the top ranks, but, comes under the same administration as Univ of Illinois.Urbana-Champaign(aka, UIUC,ranked 5 for CS and is one among the top engineering schools). Now,if u manage to get good grades or may be I should say get a GPA of 4.0/4.0 in ur first semester, then it will be very easy for ya to transfer to UIUC in ur second semester. There's nothing like Mission Impossible. All it takes is to get a couple of A+ grades, some research interests and being in touch with the profs at UIUC. Remember that its not ur GRE score alone that will make or break ur application....Infact most schools in the USA give only 20% weightage to GRE and GPA....Most the load is carried by ur SOP and LORs. So crack that part and u r in!. Also, there are many schools which fall under the same criteria. Like the Texas A&M institutes. All of them are not that high in ranks. So u can take some help from our dearest friend "Google.com" and carefully make a plan of action. HTH, Sri. |
