Q:800, V:460 yesterday :-(
hi folks,
i did my GRE yesterday and was very disappointed with my V score. I used PowerPrep 1 and 2 and got 580 and 630 respectively for V. however, when it came to real test, i dont know why it seemed like those begining words just came out of nowhere. i used Baron's list to study. i want to apply for CS/ECE so dont really need to have high V score right ? just angry at wasting of my time for this Verbal part. Q is really, really surprising for me. i have to say paper-based test looks more comfortable for me. i ran out of time for the last question, just click Next and Confirm when only 2 secs left :-) anyway, good luck for those taking the test soon. |

Congrats on 800Q! I don't think you need to retake just for the verbal for CS and ECE since I've seen people get into great schools with around that score, especially if you are an international student. Good luck! For example, bigredx24x got into great schools for EE Ph.D with your same verbal score.

Re: Q:800, V:460 yesterday :-(
hi dudes,
well, after Writing part, i started with a Q section. i just want to underscore the importance of being cautious for the first ten questions that appear. i was quite surprised when they look tougher than all the prep materials that i went thru, esp those paper-based tests. if u only use paper-based sample tests, more often than not u only face with easy to medium questions. during the real test, i always calculate twice and got the answer right only on the second shot. pls focus on what u are being asked, dont assume the question when u read the facts given. like i said, i couldnt have enough time to answer the last question. so from the advices of other TMians, i just click randomly and phew...i'm done with Q. the Verbal part, i think it's just unfair because i'm sure that i know many words from the Baron's list that ETS assumed to be "tough" words, but i got clueless on the few "medium" words that came out at first...well, when i get to RC passage that i few like more suitable for TOEFL than GRE, i know i was so screwed in V. at that time i just hope it's the pretest part so that i can have another chance. but after the V was the Research so i just skip it and look at the screen feeling totally ambivalent...i was happy with Q but frustrated with Verbal...if u look at GRE website for educators, u will see that ETS plan to change the verbal part to focus more on cognitive process rather than vocabulary, and some other things but overall they want to minimize the way test takers memorize all the words and "unofficial" questions floating on the Net. @scheng75: i totally agree, i was thinking of retaking at first but on the second thought, it cud be unwise to retake as i'm not a native English speaker and i'm not apply for social science... hope this help for those sitting for the test...me here keeping my fingers crossed for the writing score. cheers. |
