April 2005: V780, Q790, AWA6.0

Finally got the official score report today.

Also looked at my GRE diagnostic information available from ETS. Apparently missed 5 questions in Q (all "level 5" difficulty) and 2 questions in V (both "level 4" difficulty.)

Biggest thing that helped me was intensive review of vocab, I improved 130 points from my first practice PP verbal score on the actual test.

Good luck to everyone else who is taking the GRE...

my GRE exam is on july 8th.
could u suggest some unique ways apart from the usual ways (for both quant and verbal ) that u must have followed to achieve such a WONDERFUL score!

Wow! That is an awesome score!!! Share the secret! I'm retaking the GRE General somewhere in August or September, and I'm aiming for a high verbal and analytical score (my previous score was: V640; Q680; AWA 5.0). Last time, I prepared for a month or so (while working full-time as well...), but now I have a couple of months to work on the General (and the GRE Subject in Literature). I have bought the ARCO "Words for Smart Test Takers"-book. Do you think this will suffice to get a good verbal score? I will also use the Kaplan book and CD for the general test. Any good advice on how to prepare for the AWA?

Thanks for the congrats. The only commercial book I used was this one: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764117823

And more for general reference about the test than anything. I already have a good general math background...my PP scores didn't really change much as I practiced.

For vocab review I used the almost 5000 word "Barron's" word list (not sure how genuine it is) shown on this site:

It was definitely a big help, as I didn't encounter any unexpected words on the verbal section thanks to it. Keep in mind though that I'm a native speaker and have a strong English background. I already knew 75%+ of the words on the "Barron's" list on that site, but studying it alone I felt improved my score from 650 on my first PP verbal to 780 on the actual test. It took me about 2.5 months to get through the entire list. I got a 5 (top score) on the AP English Literature test in secondary school, too, so a 6 on the AWA was really what I expected to get.

Of course, take both practice PowerPrep exams all the way through IN ONE SITTING (do the essays too!) to prepare yourself for test day. Also do all of the practice sections on Powerprep to familiarize yourself with a wide variety of problem presentations.
